I cannot thank Farmer Shawn enough for what he has done. When I started to uncover Carolyn's seeds I thought there is no way anything can be done with them ,but Shawn has accomplished the impossible. Dave

Hi everyone! As I sit here contemplating ways to try to wake up the oldest seed I have from her collection ('91 and '93) I wanted to invite other folks who are doing this or have already done this to share methods for germination that worked for them.

Right now I'm leaning toward the soaking in dilute fertilizer course.

It's almost time....
And here's the tease. It turns out that I actually grew and saved seed from 120 of the leftover varieties from Carolyn's old seed collection last year. Soon I will post my offer of those seeds. This is not the actual offer! That will come soon, along with this year's minimal rules (which will include Carolyn's 5-variety and two alternates limits, just to make things easier on my end).
But for those with idle hours and moderate interest, I thought I'd share the preview of the list of "new-from-the-old" seeds that will be in the offer. The link should result in the list of varieties, but little information, beyond a noting of a few of my favorites. Also, in the spreadsheet you should find a link to the photos I took of most of them. Note that these are not posed photos, but field photos, mostly all taken on the same day. So ones that are showing still green in the photos are likely later ripening varieties. And please forgive the actual photo quality.
I will try to get the actual seed offer posted soon. We hope to be traveling to visit our son for a week mid-January, and I hope to have the actual offer up before we leave, and then begin filling orders when we return.
So here's the link to the spreadsheet, and remember that there's a link to the photos on the spreadsheet.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing
Oh, and by the way, if you know a variety, and notice that the photo shows something very different from what you know it's supposed to be, feel free to write that in the "comments" column on the spreadsheet.
Cheers!

Howdy! Here’s the actual “new-seed-from Carolyn’s-stash” offer!
For most varieties I expect to have plenty of seeds, but only a few seeds for a few of the varieties. I will send 5-10 seeds in paper coin envelopes, depending on how many seeds I have left. Also, I saved seeds from a ton of varieties last year, and some batches got away from me and spent too much time fermenting, so they look a bit strange (brown). I haven’t done a germination test on any of them, so we can only hope they are still viable. Oh, well.
The procedure for this offer:
1. Study the list(s) of available tomatoes and select what you’d like to try.
2. Email me at **conantshawn @ gmail.com** (without the asterisks and spaces, of course), including your name, your Tville/TJ handle, and your list of desired varieties - five first choices and two alternates.
3. Mail me an SASE with your Tville/TJ moniker, a list of up to five varieties, and up to two more alternatives or desirables. (The emailed list is mainly for backup and redundancy purposes.) Shawn Conant, 1*5*8*4 State Route 1*0*2, Maid**stone, VT 0*5*9*0*5 (Again, leave out the asterisks.) I will contact you if I have any questions about your request.
4. I won’t be able to start fulfilling orders until after Jan. 21 or so (vacation travels), but then I’ll try to fulfill orders as they come in, first come, first served, and post your screen name when they go out. I’ll post availability updates as necessary. (I don’t expect shortages, but if there’s a run on certain ones, well, you know…) I’ll post when the offer is closed, of course.
Oh! The link to the list again:

And the photos can be seen at:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

Later I’ll post a separate re-offer of the remainder of Carolyn’s old seeds, but I still need to do an update of that list. I think there’s still hundreds of varieties left…

Cheers!

Just a semi-relevant update: the airline canceled our flight, so our vacation is off. So I'll start packing seeds as soon as the SASEs start to arrive. No more waiting for the 20th. To be honest, we are mostly relieved. Since they canceled, and not us, we get our money back. But it has been a long time since we've seen our son and his wife, so there is some regret, but the covid surge did have us a bit worried.
Anyway, let's focus on tomatoes!

And a reminder for anybody who received seeds, especially from last year, PLEASE post any results you had from starting and growing those old seeds out. I, for one, am very curious to hear any news!

Thanks, again, for all that you have done to disseminate tomato seeds from Dr. Carolyn’s collection.
Sorry that COVID has stopped your planned visit to see your son and daughter-in-law. Better safe, than...
You kindly sent seeds last spring; Colgar Papuo, Keycoj, Lyubitel Russian, Portugal and Tamina. (Too late for the season here).
They were tested however, and a few germinated. Keycoj was the most successful in germination and growth.
Planted a few of each variety on Dec. 28, 2021 for the coming 2022 season. So far, only Portugal has germinated. Perhaps others will spring up in the next few days. Otherwise, the plan is to soak additional seeds of each variety in mild Miracle Gro and replant next week.
Photo below is the tray that is above a heating mat and under LEDs. The white stuff is diatomaceous earth that was sprinkled after sowing, some of it not as finely dusted as intended.

Wishing you and yours a safe, healthy and happy 2022. And a successful growing season.

Hi all-
Just wanted to add, Shawn has opened up his spreadsheet so folks can add facts about the tomatoes or their experiences with them, or general characteristics, history etc. The list is pretty large, so if you have any notes on varieties please feel free to add them. Hopefully this will help oeople to decide what they might like to try.
I added multiple comments and history stats today.
Please don't be shy to ask for some of these seeds!
It's a great way to keep them alive.
There are many winners in there!

Ok, just to confuse the issue, I now open up the offer of the remaining old seeds from Carolyn's stash. Over 500 packs found homes last year, but there's still about 500 packs left, ranging in age all the way back to the early 1990s.

This offer will be a little different from the other one. I still want you to send a SASE to me at Shawn Conant 15*84 State Route 102, Ma*idstone, VT 05*905 (without the asterisks, of course) with a list of up to five varieties and two alternates. And back your list up by emailing a copy of it to conantshawn*@*gma*il.co*m (again, minus the asterisks). The difference is, because I really want to get rid of as many of these seeds as possible to folks serious about trying to revive old seeds, you may send me as many of these SASEs as you want. Packing in the regular envelopes is just much easier for me than using large padded envelopes.

The spreadsheet for this offer is found here:

I just went through both the spreadsheet and the seeds to confirm that I have what the spreadsheet says I have, and it's darn close. You will get all the seeds that I have for any variety you request - sometimes that's very few, more often it's a lot. Many of the varieties in the other offer are also on this spreadsheet, because I just stole from the stash to plant what I grew last year.

By the way, the spreadsheet is in two sections. First come the available seeds, and that is followed by variety names in pink, which are now gone. I suppose I should just delete the ones I don't have any more, but it is somehow satisfying to me to see how many of Carolyn's stash of seeds have found a new home.

Anyway, have fun perusing the spreadsheet and dreaming, and feel free to ask me any questions. I might even know an answer or two.

Sorry to be so dense about this, but Gavrish's Pink (which I've been looking for) is listed, but no info re vial/env, etc. It's also not pink. So does this mean it is/isn't available? Many thanks.

If a variety is listed as available in the "new seed offer" spreadsheet but is listed in pink (unavailable) in the "old seed offer" spreadsheet, does it mean the variety is completely unavailable, or does it mean the old seeds are gone but you have newly-grown seeds available?

It should be available. I'll have to check tomorrow to be sure, but I'm pretty sure if a variety is listed, I have the seeds somewhere! So unless I post otherwise tomorrow, you should assume I have it.

Are you comfortable shipping to Canada? I think the main potential issue I foresee is trying to give back to the community and trying to send seeds back into the USA. Not always a problem, but it is potentially a problem.

So I searched for these seeds, and they do exist - in an envelope, though that doesn't make any difference to you; it just makes it easier for me to find. Anyway, they were in a sealed coin envelope, which I opened and found a small plastic ziplock baggie inside with the seeds and a note from Andre describing the fruit, but no date. And he also identified it as Gavrish's, Pink.
Bottom line - they are, indeed, available.

I have not so far had any problem sending seeds to Canada in a regular business-letter-sized envelope. I just sent some that went out today.
