They rot on the side of the highway here.
The deer I saw is one any horn hunter would lick his or her chops to shoot.
In reality that size deer needs to be left alone to spread its DNA into the population.
It really was a beautiful specimen.
It stopped and I stopped to enjoy its beauty.
I wouldn't have shot it if I could.

Here I find that I have to rotate the products or they seem to get used to it. In most neighborhoods where the pressure is a bit less, people seem to have great results all season long. I can sprinkle it directly on my plants and my soil without ill effects. I think that you would like it.
I also happened across the dried blood product Plantskydd, which comes in dry, RTU. and granular forms. You spray it on the plant which might be great for my lilacs, but it's got a 6 week OMRI pre-harvest window, so not so good for spraying tomatoes, etc. However, I read a review where someone had put the dry or granular form into sachet bags which could be hung on tomato cages.

Thank you @Setec Astronomy! I just might try that.
I use dried blood as a deterrent as well as for a plant food. I buy the 25 lb. bags so it lasts for a whole season. It's cheaper that way too. I don't think that I would spray it on my tomatoes because it does mold very easily. The sachet bags are a great idea! It's very similar to using the Havahart Deer Off which does work great for hanging on my young trees and last for 3 months. So far though the very best deterrent is my homemade pepper mix. I use a milk jug and fill it with cayenne, garlic, cumin, onion and the hottest peppers that I grow. I fill it with water and add all of this stuff. I let it ferment in the sun for a week and then strain it to remove the solids. I then spray my plants with this. Just like the other products, you need to reapply after rain. It is a good Japanese Beetle deterrent too! If you want it to be rain-proof then I add a little Wilt-Proof to the mix. Of course it is a bit of work and really stinks when you strain it but the smell does not last very long once it has been used. Sometimes because of the work I use the blood meal or bone meal instead. Rotten eggs work well too but I really don't enjoy working with them. Phew...

Been seeing a ton of deer lately at home and in the middle of Austin.
It made me think of the ultimate long range Texas hunting rifle.
I've wanted one of these all my life in 264 Winchester magnum.
Pre 64 action 26 inch barrel super fancy grade French walnut stock.
Only about $2,000.
It's beautiful.

@worth1 I really like Winchester's. I have a Winchester 1819 20g pump that I use for pheasant. I have a few other guns since my family owned a hunt club but the Winchester beats them all hands down and it is my go to gun when I'm in the field.

This really works and doesn't have to be re-applied after rain. I use it every year. it lasts about 90 days per application.
I use it to protect Hosta, Azaleas, Hydrangeas. All the deer favorites.

Amazon sells the 32 oz. Spice Concentrate in single container of concentrate for $37.99 with free shipping.

Also usually available in Garden Centers. It is not sold in the Big Box Stores.

@friedgreen51 Thank you! I just ordered some of this. What I like about it is that it is rain proof so you get a bigger bang for the buck. (No pun intended 8-) ) If I switch this out between the deterrents that I already use, hopefully I will have half a chance.

I don't think you will be disappointed. It has always worked for me, even on my Hostas, which I refer to as the Hosta Buffet if I don't spray.

friedgreen, which flavor do you prefer? Amazon does seem to sell both. I had bought some Planskydd (dried blood) in both the granular for sprinkling on the ground, and powder to mix up into a spray for foliage--it seems to me that these would interfere with each other (blood smell vs. mint/spice), your thoughts on that? I have some lilac bushes I am trying to protect, as well as my tomatoes.

I usually buy the Spice Scent. "I Must Garden" mainly works based on deer's aversion to certain odors. It repels based on both scent and taste. Mostly they never taste the repellent because they avoid eating highly scented plants. Should they get a taste they definitely leave the plant alone and will not continue to nibble on it.
This a quote from the I Must Garden website: "The Spice Scent Deer Repellent has a fresh cinnamon-clove smell that gardeners love and provides effective year-round control against deer damage. As with the Mint Scent repellent, clove and cinnamon oils have insecticidal, as well as repelling properties. Cinnamon oil also has anti-fungal properties. While the botanical oils used in the I Must Garden Deer Repellents are chosen for maximum effectiveness against deer, it’s nice to know there are other benefits."

Blood smell works on the deer's aversion to a predator scent. I think you could use them at the same time but I would stick with the granular blood scent. With 'I Must Garden' you are spraying the foliage of the plant.

So you can't spray a tomato plant then, can you? I mean not on fruit that you are going to eat?

@Setec Astronomy This is rainproof so I sure wouldn't use this on my fruit of the tomatoes. It would take some work to get it off. Using it on the foliage would be okay though.

Ha--it turned out this is the stuff I was using last year (I Must Garden). My little experiment with planting a couple of tomato plants in-ground is turning out to be a deer failure however, one of the two got the top eaten off, even though I sprinkled Plantskyyd liberally around them when I planted them a little more than a week ago. We have had a lot of rain since then. I just sprinkled some more, plus tied one of those Lifebuoy-in-a-bag kind of deer repellants right at the top of the plant. Hopefully the plant will grow some suckers and recover.

PS So, as always, I never seem able to follow-through on my plans, I had planned to spray the liquid Plantskyyd directly on the plants, but I never seem to want to go through mixing up powdered blood solution. I have little sachet bags that I was going to use to hang some granular Plantskyyd on the tomato cages, and I was able to get, as mentioned, the repellant bags, plus I have Irish Spring soap left over from last year (that I bought when I couldn't get the other repellant) that I can put in the sachet bags. And of course I have the I Must Garden repellant. So I didn't do any of that, and my plant got chomped. Of course, I could have done all of the listed things, and still had it chomped, I don't even know it was a deer, I'm just presuming, and there were hoof marks nearby, but it could have been a rabbit, or maybe the groundhog got adventurous and came around to the other side of the house.

@Setec Astronomy Plantskyyd is dried blood. If it rains you have to be diligent about re-applying it because it will wash off. I just picked up a 50lb bag of dried blood from my farm supply store. It was a great deal. It's been raining here as well and I did not get it out in time. The deer came up on my deck and ate some hanging baskets. I think that I am going to go out right now and spread some more. It rained this morning and is going to rain again tomorrow but the deer will be hungry tonight and the does are now eating to feed their fawns to.

@MissS I well know about the deer and coming onto the cement pad under my 2nd story deck. Last year was a disaster, even with putting lawn chairs across the openings. This year I am behind on my flower planting, but I am going to put shepard's hooks at each end of the front flower bed, drape deer netting on them, with enough end sections that can come across the entrances and be fastened to the house and attached garage at night. The netting may be tacked to the grass in a few places to keep it from blowing into the flowers, but it can easily all come down during the day, just resting on hooks everywhere. We have more deer than ever this spring, and they are getting bolder, even letting the cats come pretty close to investigate and hanging around during daylight hours.

According to the Plantskydd website, it's "rain-resistant". It does say the liquid needs to dry for 24 hours before it rains or watering. They say sprinkling the granular form on the ground protects plants up to 2 feet high. If you're spraying the liquid form they say you need to spray the new growth every 2-4 weeks (I think probably in the case of tomato plants that grow fast, it might be less than that). I'm sure more often is better, of course. As I noted earlier in the thread, I'm going to try today to put some of the granular Plantskyyd in sachet bags and hang it on the tomato cage.

Ha, Ha, it's a second story structure, deck or balcony or whatever. The deer come way under it, so it's like entering a roofed area for them. I have hanging pots suspended from it, and railing planters and plant stands with tuberous begonias, all of which were chowed down nearly nightly last year. They ate every leaf off my potted hibiscus. Ate my zinnia and marigold border garden in the ground. The only things they don't touch are my potted lemon, lime, and orange trees.

It used to be we would only see deer in the evenings towards dark, and for many years when we first moved up here 47 years ago we saw no deer at all. It was a big thrill to rarely see footprints in the snow on the driveway. Now the population has exploded and they are every where. They bed down in the brush I can see from my bedroom window. The younger ones are so used to us and our voices that I can walk down to my greenhouse close to where they are grazing, and they will barely notice me. It is fun to watch the new fawns every year, but they all stick around and have babies of their own and it's just too much! I have electric fence or deer netting on my vegetable gardens or I would have nothing. They even eat the hot pepper plants and fruit.

@Setec Astronomy My deck has only 3 steps up to it so they seem to manage it just fine. The nerve of the little buggers they peek right into my bedroom window while they are up there too. They are around all times of the day and have no fear of dogs or people. In fact they challenge both me and my pup by stomping their hooves and snorting at us. I have learned that to make them back down instead of charging up is to stomp right back at them. Of course if their is a big one that starts coming towards me I do turn around and head for the door.

@ddsack my experience with the deer population here is much like yours. It used to be a seldom event to see a deer in the yard and we would stop and pause to enjoy the moment. Then they came and the herd grew and grew and now everything that is palatable to them is gone and they are eating things just to survive. The spruce trees have been eaten so that they all look like they are growing on sticks.

When man kills off all of the predators then he needs to take over their job.

MissS, I've got 5 steps on the one side, I've never seen, or seen any evidence of, an attempt to come up them, they're fairly narrow on that side. The other side is 10 or 12 and I'm sure that's too many for them.

I don't remember if you mentioned earlier in the thread whether your county or state does any deer culling; as I think I mentioned, I'm not too many miles from park area where they cull every winter, as the overpopulation was destroying the natural forest ecology (according to how they explained it). I also know local police support the culling because of the number of deer/car collisions. I think the deer hunt was disrupted IIRC due to the pandemic. Have you talked to your local government about the possibility of them doing something about the deer population? Seems like they might be receptive if it's the highway construction which has exacerbated this situation. They also do other non-hunting deer population methods as I recall, some sort of planned parenthood kind of thing, ha.

We did get the DNR to do a deer cull here 2 years ago and took 57 of them in two days. This was in the spring and they could not do it longer due to the fawning season. The problem is that there was never a plan made to keep them in check and to come back in the fall. 57 was not near enough it ought to have been closer to 157-257. The DNR also ran into problems during the cull. As soon as they were set up and ready to start, many people decided to start walking by/through the shooting area to prevent the hunt. The police had to be called to assist the DNR folks to clear the area to make it a safe hunt.

We are pushing again at the City board level to get something done. There are far too many road kills, cases of Lyme's disease, homeowners can't enjoy their yards due to the volume of poop and the deer are destroying property. The City so far will give us tags to control the deer but they want us to bring in our own bow hunters to do the cull. We don't really want to bring in just anyone with a bow into our neighborhood to cull our deer. It's too dangerous around our homes for that. This needs to be a very controlled hunt so people and pets do not get hurt.
