Re: Indoor tomatoes
My Tiny Tims have set their first fruits! It's taken just about seven weeks, which isn't bad really. They've been flowering for awhile and when shaking the plant didn't seem to be getting me anywhere, I invoked the Paintbrush of Fertility. Whatever works, right? This variety is growing in a very short but wide form with nice, thick stems and rugose leaves. If the fruits are tasty I'll definitely be saving seed!

Re: Indoor tomatoes
Yah for maters!! I always use an electric toothbrush.. works wounders for the tomatoes and peppers. Need help with my tomatoes I have no idea what is going on so the leaves are turning and drying/wilting and are literally falling off I have no idea what to do!! The only thing I used for fertilizer was worm castings and so far in 2 days 4 leaves have just fell off

Re: Indoor tomatoes
I picked the first Maglia Rosa yesterday, thinking they were ripe because they were a little soft. Hard to tell because of the lighter color but one taste told me they were ripe. I like these! They're sweet with just a hint of tang to them. They range from 1 3/8" to a hair over 1 1/2" long and 1" wide.
There are more to come as these are just the lower clusters. I just posted three days ago on Thursday that one or two were showing a hint of maybe a slight change of color and here there are ripe ones. It seems they ripen fast once they start turning.

Those MR's look great! My outside plant last year didn't do so well, so I'm jealous.

MR is great because those of us with no patience can eat them before they are truly ripe and they still taste pretty darned good! .

Re: Indoor tomatoes
My indoor tomatoes have been a disaster and I don't know why. They are in the warm living room, under the grow lights which are on for 12 hours every day, occasionally a few hours longer, and they've produced lots of tomatoes. I give them a good drink whenever they are thirsty - works out to every other day. However, the leaves are dying, and they aren't growing any new leaves . Varieties are Jocholas, Birdie Jaune, Birdie Rouge, House and Black Patio. Guess I will toss them soon.........

Re: Indoor tomatoes
It sounds like your micros have had a good run and are now giving up the ghost. Most micros are listed as determinate and for me it seems that they should almost be called indeterminates because they produce so long. However, like everything else in life, the run eventually comes to an end. Mine will also start showing foliage issues around the leaf margins and eventually starting to dry. That's the signal to me that the end is near. Another sign is smaller tomatoes which sometimes have a slightly bitter edge to them. The last micro was just moved out to the porch yesterday to let frost softly put it to sleep. Farewell, Pinocchio orange. Ya did long and well.Labradors wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 7:24 pm My indoor tomatoes have been a disaster and I don't know why. Re: Indoor tomatoes
That could be so many things! You might want to check out everything from nutrient deficiencies to wilt diseases. If the plants are determinant and older, it may be simply that they're giving up the ghost. How's the watering schedule? Too much is as bad as too little. Damping off usually happens quite soon after emergence so if they're in true leaves, a nutrient deficiency or watering issue may be the culprit. Indoor plants don't usually suffer from wilt but it's not impossible. I lost my entire crop of seedlings last year due to bad media. And fertilizer burn can be costly as well.AKgardener wrote: ↑Sat Jan 28, 2023 7:16 pm Yah for maters!! I always use an electric toothbrush.. works wounders for the tomatoes and peppers. Re: Indoor tomatoes
thanks@JayneR13 these guys are young no more that 6 weeks tops!! I decided to pull the plants because the rest of the leaves just wilted and fell off. I took a really good look at them and they litterly had to root system this has been the theme for me with a couple of other plants even thought I waited to repot they looked good when I stuck them in there but the roots are not growing and I did put them deeper..looks like i need to wait even longer now to repot because almost all of my tomatoes have done that this winter.. no roots week stems and yet I have not changed anything Ive been doing over the last couple of years.. so really at a loss of why this time around I have totally failed.. redoing all the tomatoes round 3 haha..

Re: Indoor tomatoes
@AKgardener indeed, if they're that young you may have a damping off problem. It could also be bad soil media. As I said, I lost my entire seedling crop last year to bad media. Root rot is another possibility. Consider not only your soil media but your watering practices. Garden and learn. Oy.

Re: Indoor tomatoes
So I took the advice and purchased an electric toothbrush for pollination, and it seems to be working very well! My Tiny Tim’s are setting lots of fruit and the Dancing with Smurfs is finally flowering. Please don’t laugh at the design! It’s a $5+ shipping across town model. Yes I’d think that an Avengers item would include Steed and Peel, but evidently not these days. Oh well. Just so it does the job.

Those all look great!
My Golden Hour tomato continues to impress. I counted 23 green tomatoes on it yesterday and it's still only 17.5 inches tall.

I've bought some micro's and very small tomato varieties ( along with a lot of too much other things, LOL!!!) for this next winter. Thinking of setting up a grow tent for them.

Re: Indoor tomatoes
The Maglia Rosa took a rest after making all those initial tomatoes and just when I was thinking about tossing her she said, "Don't you dare! I'm not done yet." Sure enough, more tiny flower buds and now there are tomatoes setting again. This is the biggest cluster of clusters. There are about four other clusters so far but just maybe two or three fruits developing on each of those.
Old Rosa is looking a bit thinner these days as I keep clipped off any foliage that even looks like it's thinking of discoloring for any reason. I've seen her listed as a large micro and also as a dwarf. Personally I'd call her a dwarf. Most of all I'd call her a great tomato! Can't wait to see how she does outside this summer.
