The Gotch It is hard to recover when generous people take care that I stay addicted :D Tonight I will start seeds of the sweet peppers, which you sent me. TA meeting

Hello, my name is Sari and I am a tomatoholic. I have been affected by this obsession for years now. Last year I promised myself that seeds for 218 tomato varieties is enough and I do not buy any more seeds and will grow and save seeds of varieties, which I have already. I was able to stay away from...

Re: Northern Hemisphere Garlic Ranchers/2023 Crop

That package has crossed Atlantic now three times, since it was used already for trading bulbils between me and Bower. The foam between the boxes prevents the bulbils being crushed and spreading garlic smell during transit. It has served us well :)

Re: Random Images of Where We Live

I had dentist appointment at the centre of our city today. I took the bus there and when coming back I had to wait a bit, do I took advantage to take some photos in the calm but cold winter day. I grew up in the city centre, but do not get there much anymore. Trees in the park surrounding the church...

Re: The Garden of Woz...

Have you lifted any of those Vekan? I have seen pictures, where there is a one leaf growing from tip of each clove in the head, but never such that there are side shoots with multiple leaves growing like that.

Homemade pasta experiment

I was thinking what to do with all the dehydrated kale in the pantry. Tomorrow is office day and we need something to heat in the microwave for lunch. I decided to make fettuccine with cheese sauce and minced smoked moose meat. Instead of mixing the kale to the sauce, I made the pasta myself and mix...

Re: Svalli gardening 63° N

November here is typically cold, grey and wet. Currently it is a bit warmer than normal but it means that it is also rainy, because without cloud cover the nights would be freezing cold and the low hanging sun would not warm the days much. It did not rain on Saturday and my DH did not go moose hunti...

Re: Softneck garlic putting up scapes

I have had both fall and spring planted softnecks growing real scapes, but most have had those short hard stems and the bulbils grow inside the leaves. That is why I skipped planting the softnecks, because I got only few without any kind of hard stem.

Re: Random Images of Where We Live

Last night just before going to bed and shutting down lights, I looked outside from the kitchen window. I noticed some green glow on the sky across the street. I took my phone and went to the balcony in my PJs. I should have dressed up and driven to a better scenery to take some more publishable pho...

Re: Svalli gardening 63° N

Fall is in the air and season 2022 is ending soon. Garlic has been planted week ago, but leaves had not yet fallen, so I need to go back and mulch the bed. I have still carrots, leeks and kale in ground there, so some harvesting should also be done before winter arrives. Moose hunting season started...

Last year I grew Weisser Pfirsich, which I got seeds in a trade from a Finnish gardener. One of the plants grew different color tomatoes, which were late ripening outdoors, but the taste was so good that I saved the seeds. PSX_20220819_131429.jpg This year I have three plants growing from the seeds,...

Last night I picked first ear of corn and cooked it immediately. It was so sweet and delicious. Fresh corn is a rare treat here. Grocery stores have such pre-cooked and vacuum packed corn, which is edible, but not a delicacy. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cih4mdKKU_-/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link Tomat...

Re: Potato harvest 2022

Wow, freezing nights already. It is supposed to be in the 90s here next week... Those potatoes look great, and I'm glad those oversized water voles took a pass this year. Do you water those beds at all or are they fine on their own? This is the typical time for us to get the first frost, if there i...

Re: Poverty Food

I wonder why nobody has mentioned ramen noodles? You just need to boil water in the kettle and pour it over the noodles. Or if you want it more nutritional, make it in a kettle and add an egg for extra protein. Eggs in bulk are usually low cost and if fresh, can keep much longer than the expiration ...

Re: Potato harvest 2022

Week ago Saturday, I dug up all the ones, which had dead stems due to blight or just being mature. Water voles had been making tunnels in the potato bed, but there were only few eaten potatoes and nothing like year ago, when a lot of tubers were half eaten. We got two crates of Pocahontas and four M...

10 days down the track and finally some germination amongst the tomatoes. Had not seen any sign of germination two days ago so out came the Calcium Nitrate and now lots of germination in a number of cells. Not sure what was going on as same mix as peppers got and they came up nicely with the odd st...

Re: Svalli gardening 63° N

I am not quite sure, if growing onions from seeds here is worth the effort. I started the seeds indoors in February and kept the seedlings under lights in garage for two months, before I could move them to greenhouse. When planted in a small pallet collar bed, I had to cover them with a row cover to...

Re: Potato harvest 2022

Saturday I got all Annabelle potatoes up. I got three of the vegetable bins filled half plus what I brought home earlier in a grocery bag. Annabelle.jpg Blight had hit them and I found some tubers, which already had blight, so I need to be checking the ones in the cellar during storage. Six more bli...

Re: Svalli gardening 63° N

We have had problems with the same moth this year, here it is called Bright-line Brown-eye. They only attacked the leaves of the tomatoes in my greenhouse, I caught them early so maybe they didn't get big enough to start on the fruit. They have been eating the basil and pepper leaves too. I did not...
