Two Mantis Tiller Tips

A few tips for new Mantis owners:

To keep my Mantis tiller upright after I've removed a set of tines for cleaning, I discovered that a brick is the perfect height for supporting the axle. It makes hosing off the crud easy too.

There's one other thing I learned the hard way. After I pull out the pin that keeps the tines on the axle, the pin now ALWAYS goes into my pocket. It seemed that no matter where I'd lay it temporarily, it would get lost. Now into the pocket it goes!

Another tip: Always run out any gas mixture before winter. I used to have trouble starting every spring, and last year I made sure I ran it dry. This year is started up like a champ. It does NOT like old gas.

I have so many little parts screws and resistors I use i keep them on a magnet to keep them from rolling away or getting lost.
I did this working on guns too.

We had one of those 4"x6" magnetic trays, lent it to son to gather nails after their roofers finished. Have not seen it since, and they don't know where it is. Sigh ....

I had a young guy at work I was trying to teach electronics to by way of a so called back door approach.
It blew up in my face in spectacular fashion.
I was using my magnet on my fluke meter to hold screws and resistors.
I asked him how he thought the resistors were stuck to the magnet since they had copper wire on them.
That's when things went south for that days lesson.
The idiot had no idea copper wouldn't stick to a magnet or even what the properties of magnetism was.
Seriously what are they teaching kids these days or is it this guy is just an idiot.
Another test I have done with a magnet is to check so called copper nails in a package at home depot.
They aren't copper they are steel nails with a copper plating on them.
I asked the worker guy what was up with false advertising these things.
You guessed it.
He had no idea copper wasn't magnetic.
Soon there won't be anyone knowledgeable enough to fix our tillers if we can't do it.

I have a bunch of those little magnet bowls I got at Harbor Freight way back(the 4" were free, the 6" were 99¢, way back), and I use them for things like that all the time. I wouldn't be without them!

I went to home depot one time and asked a kid where the water pumps were.
He never heard of them or saw one in his life.
I guess he assumed everybody had city water.
I got my old mantis at a church rummage sale pre-covid for $5
Put gas in it and been using it for years.
It had 1 tine and a wheel for the other side.
They were using it as an edger.
Only 1 extra double tine was found. So when I use it it's 1 double 1 single tine.
Mine doesn't have a metal stand,so the brick idea is a moot point.

FYI, mantis warrantees tines for life. I called to tell them one of my tines broke, the Mantis was probably 7-8 years old, and how much would a new one be. They said no problem, we will send you a new one. No charge. I got in the mail a set of two brand new tines. You might call them.

My dad ran a tiller so much he had stellite welded on the tines.
Stellite is a hard surfacing metal that is as hard as a rock.
The M60 machine gun has a stellite liner in the barrel.
Hard surfaced on the tiller tines and they will never wear out.
