Summer 2022 Hawaii
Started seeds for cherry tomatoes 2/16, planted them in the garden 3/20.
Started the rest of my seeds 3/16, this will be a challenge, thirty is the most plants I’ve ever tried to grow at once.
Sorry for the lack of photos, when I have a few days off work I’ll do better.

@Tormato
I use the term summer loosely, but it’s starting to get hot and the surf is starting to get small, so summer is coming. Tomato time!

Some cherry tomatoes have set fruit, most are looking pretty happy. Barry looking crazy, and Juliet doing what Juliet does

Massive leaf pruning on the cherries, and finally got my real tomatoes in the ground. 30 or so, all pruned to one leader, going to be lowering and leaning as the summer progresses. Let’s keep fingers crossed for no more rain.

Looking good. Do you have any experience growing kewalo? Read it was developed in Hawaii. I have picked up some seed for Kewalo and look to grow it either this fall or next spring. Just wondering what the general characteristics are if you have grown that Hawaii tomato.

@karstopography
I’m fairly certain I tried two of the three UH determinates. I couldn’t tell you anything about them though, because determinates have never worked for me. They always get leggy (so weird) set a bunch of small fruit, then die before the fruits ripen. Wish I had some info for you, sorry.

Things are starting to happen. My September Sungold is slowly developing into quite a beast, and the rest of the cherries are about to start really pumping them out.

Next week I’ll start selling mixed cherry pints on our local “food hub” online. Hopefully make a few coins snd get my garden budget back in the black.

Re: Summer 2022 Hawaii
Sorry, going back to your May 12 pictures, you say you prune your regular tomatoes to single leader. I see you have multiple leaders on the cherries, did you prune to a specific number or just let them grow? Also you mentioned "massive leaf pruning on the cherries"; you've taken off all the leaf branches well above the unripe fruit? I always thought you were supposed to just remove the leaves up to the fruit.
Also, what are those black milk-crate looking things? Are you using them to protect certain plants? Or are those just garden seats? Thanks.

Re: Summer 2022 Hawaii
On my cherries I let them grow wild, except trimming the edges a little to keep it walkable. It rained for three weeks straight and the septoria got way out of control, so that was my massive leaf prune, not out of choice but necessity.
The black mini milk crates are super useful for storage and organizing, but in the picture I have them over baby lettuce. I give them like three or four days of shade in there before I subject them to the full sun.

LOL, every time I ask someone about their cherry pruning, thinking I'm doing it wrong, that turns out to be the answer.Mark_Thompson wrote: ↑Sat May 21, 2022 11:20 am It rained for three weeks straight and the septoria got way out of control, so that was my massive leaf prune, not out of choice but necessity.

Cherries continue to thrive. Some nasty BER in my main plot, hopefully have some pics soon.

Finally got tall enough to do some leaning. Also had huge BER issues so finally broke down and ran a drip line over.

When everything is in full growth, I find my feet can navigate quite nicely between the raised beds. It's just the rest of my body that needs to contort and adapt new and interesting shapes as it follows behind....
