First Snow Peas
Yesterday I picked the first Little Purple Snow Peas of the season. This is the first time I've tried them. They're smaller than the taller varieties but the flowers are so abundant and pretty. They might be a keeper.

@GoDawgs Do you pick them when green, and they turn purple when the seeds form, and you're not picking them? I'll be interested to see how long they keep producing for you - I've almost given up on snow peas in the spring, as it always gets too hot in May, even if it's just briefly, and the seeds start forming in just 2-2½" pods.

@pepperhead212 , I'm really glad you asked that question. Not having grown these before, I thought the purple referred to the blooms and didn't know that the pods themselves turn purple. So I guess that handful I picked green were waaaaay under done!
I will now let the pods turn purple and periodically test them to see at what point the peas start to turn starchy.

The purple podded snows that I have grown, not this variety I admit, have all had purple pods from the start. Maybe just allow a few to mature and pick the rest as you like them best

Re: First Snow Peas
If I wanted snow peas I'd have to plant in October.
They never make it to the kitchen I eat them raw outside as I pick them.

Yeah, I like them at that young stage when the peas are just starting to grow and are the size of BB's. I'll eat them when the peas are larger but to me they've kind of lost that sweetness by then. I have regular peas growing for that. I'll use these in stir fries and salads. Or just eat them in the garden.
