Re: Ugliest Tomato You Have Ever Grown

I remember a post from Tomatoville where a guy had a tomato that was so ugly, he gave it to his chickens. He said the chickens threw it back and demanded answers.

Re: How in the world did you decide on your grow list?

A new dimension in deciding what to plant this year: only 9 of my 90 seedlings survived, and most of those were ones I'd promised to other people. In mid-May I got new soil and re-planted. Most of it was stuff I had on the list before, but some of the originals I had no more seeds for. And I was out...

Re: got some new plants...?!?!

Hi Aviva,
Welcome to the Junction, and welcome to tomato gardening! Plan to water those outdoor plants every day, once they start growing and filling the container. Sign of stress = drooping leaves.

Re: It's the thought that counts

I've had some horrible haircuts from salons; I prefer the way it looks when I cut it myself.

I will probably be wearing a mask for a year or so, until the vaccine comes out. I probably won't shop or meet with friends/family for the same amount of time.

I guess everyone has to make do. There is a woman's hairstyle that is cut on an angle; very chic. Maybe that's what she was aiming for. Hiding the carts would certainly limit hoarding. :D

oRe: Belly Button Lint

That trick of wrapping lint to get roots sounds a lot like air layering, done to branches to get a new plant. Except air layering never worked for me on trees. But tomato plants like to root.

Re: Homemade Hominy Act II.

People have been making hominy for a long time. I'd reckon your lime is as good or better than what has been used in the past.

Looks delicious. I love hominy. I make it with bacon, a little bacon grease, and grated Parmesan cheese.

On Wednesday we said we'd make tacos (my favorite) & watch the rocket launch. We made tacos, no rocket launch. Determined to get our tacos-and-rocket-launch, I scored tacos again on Saturday. Maybe leftover tacos tonight. I'm in heaven.

Re: Freezing Tomatoes

I core them & remove bad spots, then cut them into large pieces (they thaw better than whole tomatoes). Put in a 1 gallon ziplock bag and flatten out the bag so it freezes in a thin shape not a thick blobby thing; they thaw quicker that way. When thawing, you can drain off the clear fluid to use as ...

Re: Too Many Tomato Seeds

If I buy the seeds, I plant them. But there are so many other ways to get seeds! When someone's offering seeds for trade, or a SASE, who can resist? Especially if you have something someone else wants. Also, sometimes when you make a trade, someone throws in some extra varieties they think you might...

Re: How is the COVID-19 pandemic affecting you?

I have loved the good side of humanity that comes through in times like these. Even commercials on television are different: instead of just throwing a product in our face, they talk about how we're all in this together, the company in question is there for us, and a gentle "Stay safe" at the end. A...

We have an enormous bag of shells pasta. I cooked up a pot, we slathered butter, garlic & parmesan on it. Ahhh!
