No it was no biggie here. We had 42 mm rain before midnight and maybe another 20 after, but I don't see any standing water in the catchments. Neither rain nor wind was heavy enough to wake me up, and now it's very tame with just a puff of wind and some drizzle. Will rain again tomorrow but there's nothing unusual about that! :)

winter is upon us.
about three inches of snow is on the ground, and will be added to over the coming week.
temps are low 30s during the day, and into the 20s at night we are in a snow cycle where
every day there is a chance of snow, 30%, 50%, 70%. no major storm in the short fore cast
just 1 to 3 inches at a time, but it adds up over the week. not my favorite time of year to
be working in a pharmacy with a drive thru window.
some slippery roads, and people not driving slow enough caused some spin outs. shake the rust off folks.
snow tires are on both cars.

November is always the worst time for car accidents. There's no residue of salt or sand on the road to stop ice from forming in the first freezes. And the workers who salt/sand are not into their routine. They always seem to hold back until there are problems. The first freeze accidents are late this year, but it won't be any different.
I got my snow tires on at Halloween.

Well, the forecast was for 30 this morning so I covered up anything that might still be too young to take a frost. The low turned out to be 38. Missed by a mile. So I will remove a few old bedsheets deployed here and there and just raise the sides on the three tunnels with row cover on them. The new forecast has a seven day string of 32-35 lows with a few 37's tossed in starting Thursday morning. We'll see. Still haven't had that first killing frost.

No snow forecast yet here but temps in the 70s might have ended this weekend. Supposed to be 40s-50s all week for highs. Time to get the snow tires on this week.

It was down to 36° at my back thermometer overnight - already up to 54° there, but that's in the sun early! It's only 45° out of the sun, at 11 am. I saw 24° forecast one night, late in the 10 day forecast Saturday, which is why I harvested everything that would kill, and only thing left is garlic and cold weather crops.

Cloudy cold windy and wet.
Totally miserable and I'm shivering and my feet hurt.
No place to get warm either.

Raining lightly then harder for a while and back to lightly, 67°, looks like this pattern will hold until sundown. Cooler air moving in overnight. Picked up my onion sets, 1/2 cubic yard of compost and got that compost into the beds just before the rain really started coming down. This is the earliest I’ve every got onion sets, usually it is right at Thanksgiving or the week after. Picked up Texas Legend, Yellow Granex, and Supersweet 1015y.

one to four inches of snow turned in to 8 to 10 inches yesterday. thats lake effect for you.
after working a 10 hour day, i spent a couple hours last night blowing snow, just enough to clear
an area for cars, and path to chicken coop. it would have been longer except for a neighbor who
was kind enough to blow snow off the driveway. that made it easier blowing it a second time.
its going to snow all week with temps not climbing much past 30 the whole time. part of the day
today will be firing up the truck, and plowing snow.

The first of the white stuff, possibly this evening into morning.

Weathermen are guessing rain, sleet, snow, or a mix, with up to 1" of slush on lawns, no real accumulation on roads.

Only rain here, starting in late afternoon, so if I want to work in the garden earlier, I can! Only up to 45° a little after noon, and not getting much higher.

@MissS; "The snow plows are getting their season debut here."

We're not getting as much as you's guys here, but still a "record," (1.6"/4.1cms thus far) and it's still coming down.

The SCRIPT has FLIPPED: I finished watering our 41 newish Arbor Vitae/Yews for the season this afternoon, and will transition to knocking snow off'n them-n-others instead.

This means six [6] 2 gallon/7.6 liter watering cans AND my treasured (sigh!) Cartago Flip-Flops have been stowed in the basement.

They'll benefit from the rest...so will I.....

Looking at one weather map this morning, it looks like I missed the freezing rain by less than a mile. It started as snow, and went to rain, with under 1" of accumulation, which has almost all melted, now.

We only got mist yesterday with no measurable rain. I will have to water today.

This afternoon will be cover-up time again. The lows for the next five days include some 20's.

image.png

The sides of the lightweight row cover on the tunnels will be rolled back down and I'm thinking about putting plastic right over that. A lot of times lows like this turn into daytime temps that get into the 60s and that causes condensation inside the tunnels even with the ends open. Chances of funk developing with that. But I think if highs stay in the 50's and I open the ends during the day things will be OK.

Not good at all. This is terrible actually, ten straight days, including today, of nothing but clouds and with some rain in the forecast. I absolutely hate weather like this, day after day of little warmth, low light levels and zero direct sunshine. Hope they got it wrong.

replace the rain with snow, and that describes the weather here in the copper country during long stretches of the winter months.
a new word to me that i believe i will grow to dislike is mesolow, meaning compact lake induced low pressure system. all that means
is it is going to snow a lot. we got one of those coming in over night. we could have several more inches on the ground by friday am.

Today we're having rain, high winds, and forecast high of 12C which is well above normal but nowhere near the record extremes. However, the weather man says we're heading into a pattern of lower than normal temperatures for the next ten days.
The probability of precip at this time of the year is 66%. Take that with the short days and the chance of seeing even a glimmer of sunshine on a given day is pretty low. There is a little variation based on microclimate but overall it's a dark time of year!
For some reason, I almost always see a glimmer or better here right around solar noon. Something about my position in the hills I guess. Same thing that makes it frostier on clear nights? IDK. OTOH you take the airport a few km away, and they can be socked in with fog for a week while here in the 'sun belt' it's splitting the rocks. :) In my climate it makes a huge difference just where you are situated, even by a few kms. The couple of rays are precious, even if it is colder (or hotter, in summer) at times.
