UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?

#1

Post: # 64582Unread post HL2601

Over on another thread here, people have been talking about planting some Ukrainian garden varieties this summer to raise awareness and keep them in circulation as a tribute to these innocent people who have been caught up in a War.

Would you like to participate in A UKRAINE TRIBUTE grow out this summer in your garden?

Easy to participate.
Choose something or several things from the list below, or that you know are from Ukraine.
Post what you are growing so we don't have many duplicates.
Save seeds from your varieties. Make pkgs of 5 seeds or more when they are dry. Label with your name, Variety and Date
Send seeds to me by NOV 1,2022. I will collate and redistribute both to participants as well as anyone who wants to grow them!

We will raise awareness collectively as we talk about why we grow these varieties.
We will perpetuate wonderful varieties that Ukrainians have developed and grow there.
We will be doing something small individually in support of Ukraine...but from small things come great things.

The list follows seperately in the next post. I will update as needed as more varieties are identified.
Thanks everyone and especially to @greenthumbomaha and @OhioGardener who have spurred this idea!

Got to look later, but have a large pepper from the Ukraine area that I had planned to grow this year, got it from Nitkovia seeds in the Ukraine, maybe the name is Lubja's Palm?? Would Lindy's Little Black Krim tomato count?

Am planning to grow Altaiskiy Oranzhevyi (Altai Orange), Debbie’s Ukrainian Plum, and Lesya pepper. If they do well, would be happy to share seeds.
Too many tomatoes, not enough time.

I'm growing Tsitrusovyy Sad - Citrus Garden and Heart of Ashgabat.

I also got a couple from a Ukrainian grower on Etsy that I'm planning to grow. One is a paste listed as Plum Bendrika Yellow (I've seen it called Zeltaja Slivka Bendrika as well). The other was a gift from the grower that she said her family liked to grow in their yard. Her translator wrote it as Yellow Fruit Jelly, but I found one called Yellow Marmalade (Marmelad žëltyj) on another site that had about the same description so I assume it's the same thing.

I should know this, I think, but was Tarasenko Ukrainian? I assume so, since a few varieties on the list bear his name. Every year I grow Legenda Tarasenko, Tarasenko 2, and Tarasenko 6.
Tomorrow I will go through the list and note which other varieties on it I grow, and will contribute to this project.
Anybody know if Shokoladnia Sosulka is Ukrainian?

I tried to find seeds for Gold Scythian Pepper and Collective Farm Woman Melon with no luck. I will keep looking to see if I find something else that grabs me. I will be planting tons of sunflowers since that is the national flower of Ukraine. Better than nothing I hope?

Oh, this is a great idea. Unfortunately, I don't think any of the things that I'm growing this year are from the Ukraine but will check to be sure. (I am growing a few Russian varieties but know that's not appropriate for this cause.) I am growing 'Lindy's Little Krim' which she collected from a sport of 'Black Krim' years ago. She's been growing it since then and says it is stable. This is the same variety that Danny mentioned and the first year that I'm growing it. But Danny did mention it first and asked if it counted as being from Ukraine.

Regarding the carrots, since carrots are biennial, that may not work well for this swap since seeds likely can't be collected until next year.

I'll try to find something appropriate to grow so I can participate but wonder, will everyone submit as many packets as there are participants and everyone will get back one of every variety submitted? Or do we submit what we can and get an equal number of packets back (by choice or as a surprise)? Regardless of how that part works, this is a great idea and will let you know if I find something that works. I may or may not be getting Black From Tula seeds but can't confirm that for sure yet.

All of the Tarasenkos are Ukrainian. This link gives a brief history: https://ekzotomat.in.ua/en/tomato-seeds ... senko.html

Also, all of the current icicle or сосулька (sosulka) varieties are Ukrainian. Interestingly sosulka is the russian word for icicle whereas the Ukrainian work is бурулька (burulka). When I do a search, I can find the same variety listed both way (i.e. pink icicle may be listed as Rozovaya Sosulka or Rozheva Burulka). Shokoladnia Sosulka (=шоколадная сосулька or Shokoladnaya Sosulka) is just a slight misspelling of "Chocolate Icicle" in Russian, but it's still a Ukrainian variety. Here's a link for Pink Icicle which states it was developed at the Dnepropetrovsk Agricultural University in the XXI century which is located in what is now called Dnipro, Ukraine. https://sadukr.ru/sad-i-gorod/4737-vidm ... nja-v.html

Lots of tomato opportunities listed in this thread. I'm in for growing a Ukranian tomato row, I just don't know what I have and is viable yet. Accuweather is predicting a much colder than normal spring for my area. Going to research and hold off starting tomatoes for a few weeks which might influence what I grow this year.

Spike, I will check on my stash of Seed Savers "Collective Farm Woman" for you. They would be 5-10 years old which is not promising for melon seeds.

Woodsprite, in past tributes it was my experience that different amounts of packets were sent depending on how peoples' gardens did. Some people had great years and others didn't. The packets you get back may not be the same as the number you sent or they could be more too. I will just say, grow as best you can and send positive vibes to those Ukraine varieties :), package what you can, and I will send out what comes in. It's also nice to offer these seeds to the rest of our forum community and especially newbies to encourage greater growth and awareness of the varieties. So if you put in extra, they will be sure to go to someone who will appreciate them.

Hope that helps?
