It's spring here. The Peonies are blooming.

Beautiful!! I love peonies. I had almost a dozen in Ohio that I had to leave behind when we moved. There is no fragrance quite like peonies. If we ever get the veggie garden and house renovations under control I want to plant more. What variety is the first picture?

I inherited the plant when I bought this house, but I think that is Sarah Bernhardt. There were a few here when I bought it and I have planted more. Most of the new ones did not bloom for me this year.

I have a bunch that has great flowers, then I have two(2) bunches: 1 flowers like 4 flowers then the 2nd does not flower at all - I have no idea why I get little or no flowers on 2 of the 3 bunch?

Peonies do not like to have much fertilizer but they do like to have some phosphorous. Could they be getting too much from the lawn? Throw them a handful of bone meal or super phosphate and that should help.

I can smell them from here. Nothing like it. Lovely varieties.

This pink one has done well on the edge of the hedge. I've had this one for 30 years though not in this spot. Their time is just about over here but they did well in the cool spring temps.
I've got one that won't bloom, too. Will try the bonemeal.

I got a new Itoh Peony two years ago and it has finally bloomed this year. It has been a very bad year for the peony's. It was in the 90's when they were in bloom and the flowers only lasted about 1-2 days.

My great grandmother has a peony planted at her grave site in a country cemetery. She died in the 1920's and it always blooms beautifully on Memorial Day.

They don't grow well here in dry S. CA either :( . I grew up with peonies in both Michigan & Japan but alas can only wait for cut flowers to arrive at Trader Joe's every year around this time.
Patti your blooms are beautiful ❤️
