Growing a few for the winter, and a little lettuce. Come spring time I'll be full throttle. Have a few hearty GaryOSena & Crnkovic Yugo chugging along despite the "cold" weather.
Great to hear the cacao tree is doing well. Can't wait to see fruit growing on the trunk.

Me too. Its been 2 years, did get a few trunk blossoms, but nada yet.

Is there really a variety of mango that supports cold temperatures? I would love to know what it is and try where I live now, I am a big lover of the mango tree and its fruits

Nico, there are many Dwarf varieties, Pickering, Carrie, NomDocMai, Glenn, are a few excellent ones, and all mangoes need a mild cool snap to make bloom pannicles. So if you get a dwarf variety, and there are many, and put it in a 100 liter or larger pot, you can move it inside for winter. Just leave it out for the first cool but not cold weather fronts, then bring inside, and don't water much.
The stress of cool weather and dryness is what kicks mangoes into blooming. Pollinators are flies, so once the flowers open on the pannicles, it should be outdoors again to get pollinated.

Nico, it is not recommended to start a mango from seeds. You will do much better buying a small grafted tree. From seed they dont usually have good quality, and it takes about 5 years longer to get fruit.

I'm with you Marsha, I love Mangos more than tomatoes too. Last year in March when we had hail that destroyed my tomatoes and Kent mango blossoms, I was more upset about the mangoes than the tomatoes. And I'm really upset when a squirrel gets one.

Last year I gave away tons of the Chocanon mangos and people were asking for more. My reaction to them is that they are better than I expected, but not as good as the Kent. Tree is suppose to set fruit twice a year (never happened) and not in the same time frame as Kent (always the same).

Shule - when we are eating fresh mangoes I often say the "this is god's fruit'. It's that good.

Also, do you grow avocado? I 'think' I only like Haas - I hated the big huge 'florida' ones and another huge one. In our area, the haas is said not to grow but with global warming (if that is the issue), it may have a chance. If you have any suggestions for avocados I am all ears.

I'm actually Not a Haas avocado fan. I like the bigger creamier types, especially if they have a sweet and nutlike flavor

Nico, beautiful. I bet the mangos grown there are really delicious. I have a couple trees that have become really non productive since they get no sun as other stuff grew up around them. I do have one mango that still produces the world’s worse mango (To me ,of course , and everyone I give it to). Lancetilla, Told it was from Brazil, but other sources say Honduras. It is football size. Really huge. Sour beyond belief. Not even good for chutney.

Elaine, I have a perfect recipe for you with those sour mangoes, maybe you have already tried it.

Mango salad! Sour mangoes are perfect for this.

julienne (strips) your football-sized mangoes (easier to julienne since they are huge!)
julienne carrots (for colour too)
soy sauce (or fish sauce)
sugar (brown or white)
lemon or lime juice
peanuts (i usually use raw peanuts with skin still on and roast them on a pan with no oil)

just use these ingredients (more mangoes to carrots) and use and add to your preferred taste. alternatively, you could look up for mango salad Vietnamese or Thai recipes.

btw, if anyone is able to get hold of Pakistani and/or Indian mangoes, they are to die for. Fragrant and aromatic too.

Beautiful trees Marsha! I lived in Hawaii for 10 years & refused to eat mangoes as they made my mouth itchy. 30 years later I discovered that I could eat them here in So CA w/ no problem. I've been eating them every chance I can get since. Do papaya grow well there too? I love Hawaiian ones not Mexican which taste watery.

Thanks for the nice compliment. Yes papaya grow great here too. We basically have the same climate as the lower areas in Hawaii. Which Island did you live on?
Mango allergy is said to be from the skin and sap, but not the flesh.
