"My dad always said if the whip poor will calls it isn't going to rain."
Must be true. It always rained for most of a week when we went up to cottage country which made me turn to the huge stack of Readers Digests.

What a beauty! Looks more tame than the Stellar's Jay my daughter was feeding in this photo taken long ago.

Re: MORE BIRDS
Went to get married in Scilly isles in 2015, and whilst there made friends with gimpy, a one legged sparrow. In less than a week he was flying in on a call and perched on hand, feeding. Lovely moments when that happens.

Re: MORE BIRDS
SpookyShoe That is not a Pileated Woodpecker. It is a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker.
Beautiful.
Beautiful.

Re: MORE BIRDS
We have the sap sucker type woodpeckers here too. Pileateds are huge in comparison and don't have any yellow on them.
One day, while walking in the woods, I saw a sap sucker drilling its holes in a tree then flying to another tree with a hummingbird following behind because they also like to sip sap from the holes the larger birds drill. I had read about this and was pleasantly surprised to witness it for myself. Darned dog prevented me from getting a shot of it though.

Pileated woodpeckers look like prehistoric birds. I love seeing them.

Re: MORE BIRDS
I was coming back from going through the drive-thru at Starbucks this morning when I saw a group of motley looking ducks and some white geese. It was cool and drizzly.

Re: MORE BIRDS
The motley ducks are miscovy ducks.
Spelling is way off.
Great eating and practically invasive.

Re: MORE BIRDS
Well finally today I caught a living creature in the garden....the grouse was out for a stroll in the rain. Not as big as a goose but about the size of a hen, and man when they puff the feathers... LOL they do look bigger alright.
These feathers are so pretty, they are perfect for hiding in the dead grass! Grouse is king of camo.
Then it starts to rain harder. Not going anwhere in a hurry. Shelter in place. Look like a stump.
Well the shower is over. Time to move again and how about some grooming. Nothing up my sleeve!
Best of all, somewhere to perch and get my feet out of the wet grass.

Re: MORE BIRDS
Not that I want to go around killing birds but they remind me of my old 28 gauge shotgun.
Some hate it others love it.
In the hands of someone like me that was raised with one they are fantastic.
I have had mine since I was 9 years old and still have it.
Beautiful condition.
A very beautiful bird indeed.
