Yes there is a new method for the detection of the virus. They are now using CT scans and there are new test kits being employed as well. Due to the new methods being used they can make better diagnosis and since the change there were 14,840 new cases reported in China.

Lots of new stuff being said:

I heard on NPR the numbers were going up fast but it was a new way of counting or some such rot.
What is up with that?
Most likely cuz WHO is there now looking into how things are being managed. You can't fudge figures when an outside party is looking over your shoulder.
I hope so because the way it sounded at first is like it had kicked into over drive and was turning into the super flu like in the Stephen King novel The Stand.

The big jump in numbers was due to using CT to screen for the virus. Not sure how that works, but it allowed them to screen a lot more people / more quickly. Those cases still have to be confirmed by the test for viral DNA which takes several days.
Some of those cases may also be people who had the virus earlier but are now recovered or recovering. So it doesn't represent a jump in the newly infected cases, necessarily. They are just widening the net to make sure the virus isn't spreading undetected - which it has to be of course, because some cases are mild and those people are not going to hospital to get treated or tested.
I didn't see any details as to how a CT could be used to diagnose COVID-19. Afaik a CT might show up something like scar tissue in the lungs (for example) I guess, or some other feature in the tissues of the patient that is characteristic of this virus effects. That also means that there could be quite a few false positives in the number reported. It is really a test of using CT as a secondary method for diagnosis, which we won't know how well it worked until the test results come in after several days.

I can not reach a friend by phone or get an email confirmation of an order through their website from Gansu province of China. I have been trying to reach them for three days. This makes me wonder if the threat has not spread further than the province of Hubei. I do hope that my friend and their family are okay.

WHO is finally gaining entry into China this weekend. That will be much better than having reports coming from just China's officials.

Now the first infected (not ill) person in Egypt, being said to be the first infected person in Africa, but who can believe that? Not me! Egyptian authorities only say that it's a foreigner without revealing his/her nationality or where this person came from. In quarantine now.

The old good news, bad news cycle, sigh . I am beginning to believe this is going to be a mess before this particular virus has it's run and perhaps re-run events. There are a bunch of things going on with this virus and what is being done about it , much stated in news reports and a lot not stated.

More at each link.
China reported a major drop in new coronavirus cases Saturday to 2,641, a decline after Chinese officials began implementing measures to contain the illness, and a slight increase in new deaths to 143.

The new figures bring the total number of deaths from the virus, now known as COVID-19, to 1,523 globally and 66,492 confirmed cases in the country, according to China's National Health Commission.

A chartered flight will arrive on Sunday for those who want to return to the United States, according to a letter from the embassy emailed to American passengers and crew members. Hundreds of Americans are on the ship.

“We recognize this has been a stressful experience, and we remain dedicated to providing all the support we can and seeing you safely and expeditiously reunited with family and friends in the United States,” the letter read

Buses will move Americans and their belongings from the ship to the chartered plane, and the evacuees will be screened for symptoms before boarding, the letter read. The plane will land at Travis Air Force Base in California. Some passengers will then continue onward to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.

...
It said that those who chose not to take the flight would be “unable to return to the United States for a period of time,” though it did not specify how long; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would decide the timeline.

The infected person in Egypt is 34 years old, but that's the info info on this patient.

In Europe (in Paris) the first patient has died because of Covid 19. It is a Chinese tourist, aged 80.

I heard on NPR the reason for the name was several fold.
One was to try and get rid of the stigma of the name of the city it might have came from, Wuhan.
Like the Spanish flu did.
Spain had nothing to do with the origins of this flu but reports of it were allowed where reports in other areas weren't allowed or played down.
From Wiki.
"To maintain morale, wartime censors minimized early reports of illness and mortality in Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States.[10][11] Papers were free to report the epidemic's effects in neutral Spain (such as the grave illness of King Alfonso XIII).[12] These stories created a false impression of Spain as especially hard hit,[13] thereby giving rise to the pandemic's nickname, "Spanish flu".[14]"

Let's stay on the topic please, as requested in the first post. Thank you.

I fear this may be beyond being contained now and some troubles ahead as the powers that be are saying to stay calm and that the covid19may well be with us through next year. Add that to the shortage of mdical equipment needed, and it is concerning to me.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business ... facturing/

Mapping the spread of the new coronavirus: The United States, Germany, Sri Lanka, France, Cambodia, the Philippines, India, Thailand, Japan, Nepal, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, Vietnam, Macao and South Korea have all confirmed cases of the infection.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/ ... pass-68000

There is also growing concern over possible infections among people who disembarked from the MS Westerdam in Cambodia on Friday, after it was confirmed that one passenger, who later flew to Malaysia, tested positive for the virus.

The 83-year-old woman flew from Cambodia to Malaysia with 144 others from the ship on Friday. The woman’s husband tested negative for the disease, Malaysia’s health ministry said.

The ship’s owner, Holland America, said: “While the first results have been reported, they are preliminary at this point and we are awaiting secondary testing for confirmation.”

Around 68,500 people in mainland China are now confirmed to have been infected with the coronavirus, and 1,665 people have died from Covid-19, China’s National Health Commission said on Sunday. The figures included a further 142, in the 24-hours to midnight on Saturday, and a further 2,000 new confirmed cases.

The daily total of new cases represented a drop for the third day in a row, but researchers have advised caution. The dip in reported numbers follows a spike last week when Hubei province changed the way it was counting cases of the virus.

The increase in total cases seems to be leveling off a bit worldwide in recent days but the spread to other countries is very worrisome. Currently the death rate for cases that have reached a conclusion (full recovery or death) is at 10%. Of the 53K active cases 11.5K are in serious or critical condition.

This is a good site to monitor the virus progression worldwide: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

NPR program this morning had a guy describing China.
Lots of places shut down.
Economy on the verge of collapse according to some.
Stock market falling.
Effecting Wal-Mart the most.
Story has it doors may close due to lack of products.

It is fascinating to see news directly out of Asia if you can access it. The coverage is almost 80% virus, 20% the rest of the news. Many countries near China are hit esp hard as they depend heavily on China for a large portion of goods including food. You can bet that places like the Dollar Store will be affected if the virus is not under control soon.
My brother in Japan says nursing homes are closed to visitors. His elderly mother in law is hospitalized w/ a broken leg due to a fall & having surgery soon but they can't visit her either, not even afterwards. So some hospitals are on lock-down too. Many events like concerts & open air markets are being cancelled. Some schools are closing but not all at this point. People are urged to work from home if they can. Public transportation is the norm there but everyone is trying to avoid using it. Not everyone has a car as it's unnecessary. Plus there's little to no parking depending on where you go. So it's becoming difficult to do your daily normal routines there.

When the thing first started I brought up the economy.
Panic or not.
Many people don't realize just how precarious our supply lines are.
And yes commercial airlines are huge virus tubes.
