“Using that newly available information, a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that in 2015, 449,864 of 933,295 physicians in the U.S. (48 percent) accepted some kind of payment from a pharmaceutical or device manufacturing company”

In general, those payments were not lavish – 95% were meals, of which 80% were valued at less than $20, according to the study.

“But they were commonplace, and achieved results. Offering the most comprehensive estimate of its kind, the study found that more than 20% of Medicare Part D expenses on branded medications resulted from doctors who received a payment related to a drug they prescribed. Nearly 30% of Part D physicians were paid for at least one drug they prescribed during the sample period.

“The prevalence of the practice implies that the financial impacts are economically large,” the researchers wrote.“

Connecticut it was just announced is getting stricter when it comes to enforcing the wearing of masks and other guidelines. The guidlines they felt were not being enforced because it was too harsh to arrest someone for not wearing a mask, so instead they changed it to an infraction with fine, to increase enforcement. They said the state was asked to change it, but they didn't say who asked for it. I expect the police, but I don't know for sure. The infraction comes with a fine of 100.00 for not wearing mask when you are supposed to, 250.00 for attending a large gathering outside the limits of those allowed, which is 100 people outdoors and 25 people indoors (businesses like restaraunts exempted), and 500.00 for organizing a large gathering outside the allowable limits.

It could have been the state's legal consultants, in that it is easier to defend in court if you are just fining someone. The burden of proof switches from the 99% beyond a reasonable doubt standard to the civil standard which is preponderance of the evidence, roughly 51% chance the accused is guilty. Also if the defendant risks jail, they have to provide a public defender and an actual judge. Admin court judges usually have no educational requirements at all. They often may be well versed in the law, but it isn't required.

Lets just clarify, there is no law that says a doctor cannot be a consultant or work for a pharmaceutical company. They are not allowed to accept GIFTS. Your employer may consider your salary a gift, but chances are you don't. There is a difference between working for someone and being paid for it, even if employed as a consultant, and gifts. Anyone is allowed to provide services and be paid for them. The second person there on the list says he has informed Yale of his role, does not see patients or prescribe medications, and excuses himself from any decision involved the company he provides services to. That is a role that is very different from someone who uses the medications in practice of a company he also is employed by. That is dicey, but I guess not illegal.

Just reading an update on the University of Illinois Champlain and what they've done about the outbreak fiasco. They still are confident that the testing plan can work, but they have to actually stop people who are positive from going to parties in spite of it!

UT had a football game this last weekend.
They had a ton of people there but only UT students were required to show proof by way of a test that they were COVID 19 free.
Cant remember the count but several tested positive.
Were do they come up with these rules?
Killing businesses left and right but allowing thousands into a football game, just stay in your pod or else.
Or else what, I'm gonna be the first person in history to get kicked out of a football game for leaving my pod.
You're a blue whale not a white whale stay in your pod.
Blue whales and white whales don't mix, remember that.
But I have a white whale friend I want to say hello.
No just wave your flipper at them, stay in your pod and put your mask on.
But I'm eating and drinking.
No the rules say drinking and eating not eating and drinking so you have to wear a mask.
Yes they have the rule you have to wear a mask unless you are drinking and eating.
Really????
Like I could get away with going into the doctors office and they allow me to not wear a mask because I am drinking and eating.
Put your mask on sir.
Sorry but I'm drinking and eating.
Oh okay, 'well alright then carry on, my mistake, enjoy your meal.
Then they want you to be 6 feet apart boarding a plane where you will be sitting crammed together in the seats.
One sign at the elevator says while on elevator face the wall and dont talk to anyone.
Another sign next to it says only one person on the elevator at a time.
Starting to see a lot of old dirty masks on the ground.
Is that a BIO Hazard?
Just asking.
Then last but not least they had a kid show up to school on his hybrid stay at home day.'
Gets suspended for a week.
Shows up the next day they call the cops and he gets arrested.

Worth1,

I had a really hard time following your progression through this post. Maybe you could just say what the point is.

My wife is slated for foot surgery Friday and was required to have a Covid-19 test at the hospital today. Yesterday, she received a call from their billing department stating that she needed to pay $1000 upfront before being administered the test. My wife is on Medicare, but we also have a supplemental plan with another insurance company. After receiving that information, the lady mentioned that she would call back if there was any further issues. So far, no call...

This morning I noticed the linked article mentioning the sometimes exorbitant costs for the Covid-19 test and that supposedly insurance companies are required to pay for the test. But is the high cost justified and just another reason for escalating health costs? And what was the reason for demanding the money before giving the test? I realize testing is important, especially for hospitals and clinics, but are things getting out of hand?

The rapid Covid19 test here is $225, from one vendor anyway. Results in just hours. I know this because my daughter had it done as a condition of travel. I had the antibody test months ago and that was $135, but I was a new patient and some of that total cost was part of the new patient fee. There are also free testing sites in our area, but the results take longer to get as I understand it.

$1,000 for the Covid test seems extreme, was some of that up front expense part of the other expected costs associated with the foot surgery?

The billing department indicated that the $1000 was for the procedure that was being done today, which only involved the Covid-19 test. We have never had to provide upfront money to either of the two hospitals here in the last 18 months. But maybe the hospitals are getting stiffed by other patients and are short of cash.

I was required to have a Covid test prior to my cataract surgery in June. My co-pay was zero but I think that my Medicare Advantage plan was billed about $200.

The last time I had anything done in a hospital I was required to pay something upfront.

Hard to bleieve people are being charged for COVID tests!
No charge for that or anything else here when we enter a hospital. Meds can be expensive once out though.

I'm holding out for the government to employ testers as piece workers. Then I'm heading down to the local pubs and beaches.

I have not experienced having to pay anything upfront when having something done in the hospital after presenting adequate insurance coverage. Yes, there was a bill that arrived weeks later, but maybe as Bob Dylan wrote...The Times They Are A-Changin'.

@worth1 My area has free Covid-19 testing at a central location with results available within a few days. Earlier in the year I went for a test after it was suggested that certain people over a certain age and experiencing any symptoms could get a test free of charge. And as it has been mentioned, there should not be a charge for a test that would either protect a facility or other individuals from being exposed to Covid-19.

My wife did go today for the test and no further mention was made for any upfront payments.

@pondgardner now that I think about it, the hospital wanted me to pay my co-pay before surgery and they gave me a discount for paying up front.
