Hello From Long Island, New York

I go by the handle of Old Chef- Because I am. I have been gardening for about 50 years and cooking for about the same. Tomatoes have always been a passion. 16 years ago I started a wood-fired Pizza Business in Brooklyn. Fornino.com. I grow about 75 plants a year, some for the restaurants, some for fresh eating, some for sauce for my family. I have not purchased a can of tomatoes for the family in a very long time.
I was recently interviewed by a publication and was asked the question-What is the best way you prepare tomatoes? My answer was- Simple, I grab a vial of Sea Salt, walk out to the garden, Pick a tomato, give it a lick and sprinkle some salt!!

Glad to be here. The older I get, the more I realize how little I know. Looking forward to learning more!

Welcome, Old chef. It's good to see you over here! You'll probably see a lot of familiar names, and some new ones too :)

Hello and welcome! Excited to hear your experiences gardening and cooking.

I second pepperhead's question. And I'll add, how do you grow them? 75 plants is more than modest.

Welcome! A wood-fired pizza oven is a dream of mine! When we get to build on our land, we plan on having a taboun and putting a shelf in it for such things.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! I grow all types of open pollinated and heirloom tomatoes that I use for cooking, eating and canning. I keep the cherries down to a minimum . I love them, but a pain to pick.

Cooking in a wood fired oven is he most primitive way to cook,it is also the best! Certain things in life can't be replaced with more modern methods! The high heat gives tremendous flavor to the most simple vegetables.

Thanks again
