Terveisiä Suomesta / Hello from Finland

Hello from Finland,

I have been a member of this forum for some time now but I have not yet properly introduced myself.

I joined this forum because I am interested in plant genetics, currently tomato breeding. :D I tried some years to get access to Tville (also as pippin) but for a reason or another I never got access. Then I was lucky to find this forum and had no technical problems of joining. Thanks for keeping this forum open for everyone!

I am a part time organic farmer, selling some vegetables in the local farmers market, not much but enough to call my hobby as a farm. I started maintain my own vegetable seed lines some 20 years ago because I though that was ethically the right thing to do. I am fascinated by the idea of local, maybe even farm specific food plant varieties and open source seeds. I am not against the seed industry, we would be ruined without them. I don't make my living out of the agriculture, I am employed to completely other industry.

My nick Pippin is not referring to Tolkien or anything cultural like that. It refers to pippin apples, a pip like a seed, the essence of evolution and new plant varieties. I thought it was funny as my name is actually Vesa which in Finnish refers to a young three or sprout, fundamentally of asexual origin ("son" if you like).

BR,
Vesa (aka Pippin)

Welcome Pippin.

Your username reminds me of one of my favorite apples, Cox's Orange Pippin.

Let me know of any tomato varieties that you may be looking for.

Thanks for all the welcomes and kinds words!

It is great that we have this forum where people are able to share their gardening enthusiasm. :D For some reason, this format fits better to me than the more contemporary social media. I have too much to say to be fitted to one post or tweet. :ugeek:

I wish there just was a little more buzz around different breeding projects. I still wonder how much to share of my own work here and in what format. I do understand that Tville will propably not happen agarin in this forum but that was a serious tomato talk or what? Still is but not that much. If you were asking me, we need to get a new generation go crazy about tomato breeding. :D

Pippin

Pippin, there is always the OSSI forum for discussion of breeding at a greater depth and detail than here.

Pippin I've been planning to make a post here about the 2021 season of breeding, and I hope you do as well. I tried one night but ran into a glitch and post didn't go through. So the moment passed and I decided to wait until I had actually some ripe fruit to show. Mostly I've been too busy - too many projects in the garden.
We do actually have quite a lot of amateur breeders here at the Junction. So if we can find the time to post pics and discuss our projects, I think it will encourage others. :)
The OSSI forum is nice because there's discussion about breeding all kinds of vegetables. It's fairly new so doesn't have a lot of content nor many active members. I did start a thread about my 2021 tomatoes there a little while ago. http://opensourceplantbreeding.org/foru ... opic=553.0 But TJ is a more active site, and has better support for posting pics.
TV was really great because of the diversity of breeders there, including some professionals who are unlikely to show up in OSSI because they have other markets for their work. The main problem with TV is that there's no guarantee that what you post will remain accessible if or when the site goes down.
Anyway, please do post about your breeding projects or about your breeding season, whichever way you want to do it! I have the same problem of not knowing exactly where to start - because I decided it would be a big tomato year and took on way too many projects.

Thanks for pointing me towards the OSSI forum. I remember reading some discussions there but at the time it looked rather inactive yet with huge scope (i.e. covering all food cropsj.

Nice to see your project there too Bower, we seem to have similar interests at least what comes to the goals of low maintanence, short season and more colors than just plain red. Well, nothing wrong with reds, my first interesting breeding line is red. :D

I will very likely keep discussing the genetics here in Junction as we have some threads open already which I want to keep posting.

Pippin

Welcome from Pennsylvania! Glad you introduced yourself. Your tomato genetics work sounds interesting.
Finland is close to my heart as we had an exchange student from there in 1981-82. We are still very much in touch with him and his family and have enjoyed all our visits to Finland. Most memorable were his wedding, Christmas above the Arctic Circle and 50th birthday!
Look forward to you sharing your info!
