CELERY with brown flesh

I can find all sorts of stuff about celery problems online but nothing about celery with brown interior flesh in the stalks. It's never been an issue for me before. I have seen it in store bought celery on occasion. The friend who gave me the starts last spring also has this brown interior on her plants. We are both growing in containers but our mixes are different. It was normal earlier in the season.

Is the brown flesh still edible or is it bad?

I laughed at that question. I never tried it and am not tempted to do so when it looked so off. Not every stalk was affected so I got some for the freezer. I wonder if it is the variety or if it is possible, after all, to overwater celery.

It seems like 3 out of every 4 stalks I've bought at the store have the same problem. They look fine until I start to cut them up. I wonder if it is a weather-related issue? I do still use any that aren't too bad for cooking but not for eating raw. And I love celery stuffed with either peanut butter ir cream cheese 😢

It sounds like an infection. I found some information on it here:

Yes, I saw that site but didn't find described what is going on here. They mention only outer surface damage or signs, nothing about the interior flesh being brown. From that site, it does sound as if it IS possible to overwater celery and that may lead to infections of whatever bacteria.
This year I grew it in a very large pot that I never let dry out. Previously, my celeries have always been in smaller pots that would dry out. In future, should I grow it again, I will tweak the watering.

Sounds like that same stuff that hits cabbage and rots the insides.
