I personally have not had seed set and no sources here in Australia have seed for sale, so no MrBig46 I have not. Going to collect a few more lines to see if I can get some seed.

Woz, I'd like to ask you if you could have some of those elephant garlics bloomed. Maybe there would be some germinating seeds. For me, it would be an opportunity to try growing this garlic and start this year. Thank you in advance.

PS.:I realize I still owe you something for the tomato seeds you sent me.

Plants will not flower until October or November MrBig46. Still have your address and some bulbils will shortly take wing

Glad you said that! Thought maybe I was doing something wrong or wrong timing for seed gathering; maybe they're later? I mean, they do sprout on the flower heads, after all, so it must be possible to save seeds!
Glad you are able to share bulbils. I would have offered seeds but after checking find that I did not save any last year.

To be honest with you Growing Coastal, your seed head pictured is the first time I have heard of seed actually produced by this species. Don't know if it's our conditions that prevent there formation, lack of suitable pollinators or if people just don't look for it.

I found a farm on Facebook that grows elephant garlic. They offered me cloves of garlic to buy, so I ordered three. It will be quite expensive, about $ 12, but I want to try it. They wrote me that they would bet as soon as the ground thawed. So I still have time. It will be interesting if I can multiply the garlic.

I got the three cloves of elephant garlic. Now I'll wait for the soil to thaw and put these in the ground.

I need an advice. I have those three cloves of elephant garlic. But I can't and I won't be able to plant them in flower beds for at least three more weeks. I'm thinking of growing that elephant garlic at home in a container. How big should it be? Is there any hope that anything would come of it?
Or plant them in containers of about a liter and then put it somewhere in a flower bed in a month?
Thank you in advance for every idea. Vladimír

MrBig46 I have never grown elephant garlic, but from what I read, by planting in the Spring, the end result may be a mono-bulb. If that is the case, you should just plant it in your flower bed when you can work the soil. The preferable time would be to plant in the Fall, but depending on your growing conditions, that too can result in mono-bulbs.
It's not what you gather, but what you scatter, that tells what kind of life you have lived.

I always get a huge single round mono-bulb from cloves. Then, when that is planted is when I get the huge head of garlic. Maybe my climate is a bit too cool for formation of a head the 1st year.
The flowers of the elephant garlic attract all kinds of pollinators who seem to love allium flowers.

Depending upon the size of the cloves, to have these alternate between big rounds and a head of cloves is normal, indeed some clones always alternate between the two, so plant in garden bed, mark well as they probably will not form a flower head but they may do so. Roughly when do you expect to plant MrBig46

On Wednesday, the ground was thawed, quite damp, so I put the cloves in the ground. From Friday it started to freeze at night and during the day (tonight - 7 ° C), I hope it won't hurt them. It should warm up from Friday, I hope permanently.

Only after two months did the first leaves of elephant garlic appear. I do not know if some of it will be.

Glad you got one growing!. EG does not mind some freezing and snow. I read online that they can withstand -30F or -35C. Winters have never killed any here as far as I can see but we never get that cold.

I don't know what will grow out of that elephant garlic in the end. If it will be one light bulb or it will be divided, or there will also be some small bulbs. I wonder if I will be able to plant what I harvest before the winter.

When mine bloom they are split ones, as you say. The ones that do not bloom in my garden, single rounds, die back during the summer and I save them for fall planting. Some of those get pretty big and are delicious themselves according to a friend who ate the ones I gave her for planting!
Just have to wait and see what happens with your bulbs that have been planted in the spring rather than fall. Do keep us posted! It is interesting to watch your experiment.

I read an interesting diploma thesis of a student of Mendel University in which he dealt with the propagation of garlic in-vitro. He wrote there that he received eight seedlings from one clove. Does anyone have experience with this method?
