Futtsu Black Early Winter Squash

First one, have three more out on the single vine. Bonus trait, wife gets to decorate with it as the squash is so pumpkin-like. Not sure what the taste will be, but they are relatively tolerant of shade based on where I have them which is partly under a massive live oak canopy and intertwined with a stand of 5’ tall okra and 12’ long bitter melon. Any squash that can tolerate some shade works for me.

Black Futsu is one of my favourite squashes. It is C. moschata, the same family than Butternut, for example. The bonus is that it does not cross with other pumpkins, so you can save seeds even when growing with some non-moschata. The flavor is nutty, and sweet. Mine have been still green when harvested but they do ripe to this chestnut colour in the storage. Good choice! :)
