Pretty sure it's a monarch. I can see the wings inside of the skin of the chrysalis.

I think that you are right. Since it is black it will eclose (open) today!

I just learned something too. I didn't know that the monarchs would breed the whole year through. :D

Yes, pictures too if possible!

The cocoon was vacated, but it happened when I wasn't looking.

Monarchs in Texas

There's a very large migration through Texas coming from and going to Mexico in the Spring and in the Fall. But a small population of monarchs stay in Texas and don't migrate at all.

A population that breeds all year too. That truly is a blessing. With current events in Mexico, it just may come to the Texas and Florida populations that keep the Monarchs in existence.

Monarchs usually eclose by 10 am. Only takes about 2 minutes, then another 5 or 6 for them to pump fluid into their wings to form correctly. If it doesn't happen then, it won't most likely.

While I was watching a monarch caterpillar in the traditional J shape it takes before turning itself into a chrysalis, I found an actual chrysalis hanging on an angel wing. It's the same angel statuette that a previous chrysalis was on.

I feel things are going to happen in the next day or so. You can see the wings inside of the chrysalis.

Well if it hasn't enclosed by now, it's not likely to be too healthy,(☹) but who knows, maybe you'll get lucky. Only about 1 in 10 actually makes it without distortions or premature death.
