First tomatoes! Orange Caprese. Those long sepals remind me of Cherokee Green.

Also have a few starting on Matt's Wild Cherry and Indigo Cherry Drops.

Some non-tomato stuff from my garden today.

Jerusalem artichokes, they'll get 8-10 feet tall, with little yellow flowers.

Egyptian walking onions, a perennial onion

And Mizuna. I haven't tried Mizuna until this year, it's my new favorite green. Very good, and this variety is supposed to hold up to the summer heat very well, and it gets hot here.

That mizuna is incredible! It keeps growing back, after cutting the perimeter greens, and leaving the central core. It grows well into the summer, before bolting. But here's a tip - don't order the red or streaked varieties, unless growing in the colder weather, as they bolt quickly. The green will grow for a couple of months, but those bolted early. I even grow it indoors, in hydro for a few months, but the others bolted almost immediately.

The one I got is called 605 Summer Mizuna, supposed to tolerate heat. I've found kale to be pretty bolt-resistant here, too, but I don't love eating it. I have rabbits, so none of the greens will go to waste. Although, they're getting spoiled on dandelions, the really like those things. Maybe I'll plant them a dandelion garden πŸ˜‚.

That summer Mizuna sounds very interesting, not aware of it having made its way Down Under yet, which is a pity as ours start running to Seed around August as it starts to warm up

An update of sorts. My tomato garden in the back yard is not doing well. Plants aren't growing. I think it's my dirt. Some are doing good in there, but I've decided to give that space over to berries. I have 2 raspberry plants in there and 2 boysenberry. I have blackberries and 2 other raspberries in other places around the back yard. I have red prairie plums which will go back there next year. Also, I found a mulberry seedling in my front yard! So that'll go in the back too. I'm going to just do raised beds in the future, everything in the raised beds is growing very well. Backyard will be for fruit. Side and front yard for veggies, and apparently sunflowers! 🌻🌻 🌻 πŸ˜‚

Some of my most anticipated tomatoes were planted in the raised beds, and another spot where tomatoes are doing well, so I'll still have a tomato season. Also, the 4 I gave my dad are doing great. I have him mortgage lifter, KBX, indigo cherry drops, and Marzano Fire. I have 2 plants that look pretty great, bigger than the rest and healthy, looked at the tags and both are Stump of the World.

A couple pictures to share, one of one of my raised beds, with potatoes, squash (I'm not certain, but it think it's a green turban squash), and a bunch of mustard greens that went to seed, I left them because they're pretty. There's other stuff in there, basil, lettuce, arugula, etc, but it's all been dwarfed by squash. I like squash better than most greens anyway.

And a walking onion top set. They make bulbs instead of flowers, they get heavy and fall to the ground and grow a new plant from the top set. Kinda cool.

I'm starting to suspect that those walking onions might become a nuisance! I have been finding them growing in different pots they might have been close to last year. Delicious tops in early spring as they come up when the chives do.

I'm ok with that, I can always pluck off the bulbs if I want them to stop.

I planted all my extra random tomatoes in a couple spots, I found another very healthy Stump of the World. If this one tastes good, I'll grow it just for it's tenacity! I also found another Taiga. My dog got in my garden and pulled that one out, very random that she picked that one. She never tried to get in the garden last year, but this year, she found her jumping legs! She just hops straight over without touching the fence. It's only a 30 inch fence, but she's pretty little (35 lbs) and her back legs are bowlegged. So yeah, pretty happy to find those tomatoes!

Also, not at all tomato related, but I love this picture, my handmade soaps! They turned out so pretty this year. I'll have them at the Farmers Market on Saturday.

How cute are cucamelons? I was expecting them to be more sour, but I really like the flavor.

Stuff is taking off. My volunteer winter squash is going nuts! There seem to be 2 varieties, one is a pie pumpkin, the other, I think is buttercup. Which would make me happy, because it's my favorite. Several tomatoes on plants, plants are finally growing, I think I'll get a harvest.

Trying to keep raspberries alive during the heat wave. It's not even super hot yet, but they're not happy. Meanwhile, the blackberries are like "what?" πŸ˜‚

It's going to be crazy hot next week. 115 on Tuesday. As long as I can keep everyone watered, they'll be ok.

This heat is intense! It was 103 yesterday, 108 today, 112 tomorrow, 115 Tuesday. My raspberries are wilting, my dogs chewed the hose again, so I can't get to them with the hose, so I'm dragging buckets. Most of the tomatoes look ok, but I just picked an Azoychka that was about 2oz. They're panicking and ripening their fruit.

I was going to continue riding my bike to work, it's not that far (2.5 to 4 miles, depending on course), and my bike is electric, so I don't even have to pedal if I don't want to, but I have enough problems with the heat (pretty much just migraines), I don't want it risk it. My sister's work schedule this week works with mine so I'll be able to take her car every day except Tuesday, and I can borrow my mom's car.

Small victories, I found a sprinkler that'll reach all of the raspberries. I mean, I knew I had the sprinkler, but I thought it was broken.

The Azoychka tomato was terrible 😝 🀣. It wasn't really actually ripe, just trying to ripen a tomato before it dies. But that plant is in the zone where the water reaches now, so it'll be ok.

It got to 38C here today. (104 F) That's got to be the hottest I've ever experienced on the coast in over 50 yrs. It's a dry heat much as we get in the interior of the province. I keep checking for potted plants that are wilting and moving them into shade as well as watering them.
Too hot to be hauling buckets! Take it easy.

It gets hot here, 110 is about as hot as it ever gets, but that's not usually until closer to august. June is too early!

June is definitely too early and we don't usually ever get hotter than 33C a few times in a summer, maybe. Now 30 will seem cool!
Anywhere away from the water is hotter. I still get ocean breezes up away from it but not a lot further up the hill it gets hotter pretty quickly.
Inland on the island is pretty hot though not as hot as Lytton with it's 47 C. Port Alberni always gets a mention in weather reports as being the hot spot on the island; inland on an inlet - 42 today.
It is supposed to be our hottest day, today.
The inversion has brought hazy skies with pollution staying at ground level. I coughed walking the dog at 5a.m. and wore a mask to the store at 7.
So glad I don't have to work through any of this! Hard enough just to keep plants watered when it's hot all the time, day and night.
Stay cool!

One of my volunteer winter squash. I had buttercup, turban squash, red kuri, and pie pumpkins last year that these seeds could have come from. I think this one is turban squash. I have some that look like buttercup, I hope, but I thought this one looked like buttercup at first, too. Turban squash is good too, so I'll take it. I have some that are round, that are probably pie pumpkin, but might be red kuri. I hope not, I've never tasted a red kuri that I liked. I keep trying them, but they're just never good.

Oh, found a red kuri! I'm gonna make the pie pumpkins and red kuri into pumpkin puree for the freezer, my sister will make pumpkin bread all winter. I'll eat the buttercup and turban squash.

I planted 3 trees in the back yard earlier this year. Donut peach, french plum, and a pluot. The french plum died right away, the pluot had some scraggly little leaves just barely hanging on, and the donut peach was like "what's the problem, guys?" and is full of leaves. I figured the pluot was dead, and with the recent heat wave, the little leaves dried up. But today, I went in there and it has new leaves forming! Lots of them, everywhere!

The raspberries struggled in the heat, but survived. The blackberries didn't seem to notice.

The french plum may still be a loss, but they're basically the same as Italian plums, and my dad has one of those I can pick all I want from.
