I think you'll like Ibiza Blanca. It is the best tasting of the ramallet/hanging toms that I've come across, and it keeps forever.

Picked our first cucumber today, a Sikkim of which there is nothing left after dinner, kids loved it. Have another 4 out there ready to pick along with three Long Whites, be interesting to see how the LW's taste, they were a bit bitter last year. Better have a go at pollinating the few plants of Sikkim that I have growing

Whwoz wrote: Wed Jan 29, 2020 5:42 am Question for those who grow on the garlic bulbils, do you take the opportunity to grow them in pots or do you just plant straight into soil? Those that I planted in pots last year did not make a lot of top, probably need to sort this out better but do not think I have a virus issue just yet anyway.
I've always done mine in pots or flats - they've done best in a large flat I have which is about 6 inches deep. But I have had some volunteer in the ground (in a compost pile actually) which did well, except for being easily lost among the weeds. I've seen pics of Henry's place iirc he had some beautiful rows of bulbils in ground. The biggest issue with pots or flats is how hard it is to judge watering. I almost never water garlic in the ground and they usually get what they need. But it was hard last year growing bulbils in the greenhouse - they did suffer some heat stress and I was constantly worrying whether to water or had I given them too much. With your climate being much hotter, I would think in ground would be better for them. Just pick a spot where there's no grass! ;)
Beautiful job with those bulbils and flowers! :) And your sweet potato scene is very nice! A friend of mine tried them in her greenhouse last year but we've had a run of cold summers, so not sure if she's given up or if it was worthwhile.

Thank you Bower for the information on the garlic bulbils and the positive comments on the Sweet potato.

You made me think about what I can use as a big pot and I realised that I have some of my IBC wicking beds the I can top fill with sand and potting mix. Should work beautifully. Thank you

The Gold rush x Jade Numbat Zucchinis are prolific as well as tasty. Picked about 22 off the 5 plants a couple of days ago. The biggest plant is really powering on, with every 4th or 5th leaf node throwing out 2 fruit instead of the normal 1. This plant and 1 other each have a fruit on them that will serve for seed - a lot of the fruit have been stopping growth around 5 to 6 inches long, these two would be well over double that now and I cut one about 9 inches long open and it had seed in it, so looking good for F2 seed

Had forgotten that I took a couple of photos of the pick, along with 3 of each of the Long white and Sikkim cucumbers

The "Trout Cods",

I have seven of these growing at the moment, they are out of the Beauty Line from the Dwarf Project. Back in 2014 Patrina sent me a few F2 or F3 seeds to grow on and try and find my own line to follow. 4 or 5 plant were grown and these were they result of one of the plants. The plant that these fruit came off was a full indeterminate with no Dwarf characteristics obvious to me. They were the first that were anything near to a GWR that I had grown and I can recall being surprised at how ripe they were with some of the earlier fruit where they red blush was not so obvious. Indeed I recall the green being a deeper shade than the photos show. Taste on these was surprising, absolutely delicious and our kids, then aged 3 and 6 would clean them up, no matter how much was put in front of them. The appearance when cut was startling, the first time I had seen anything like that and it prompted me to "tag" the line "Goodoo" which is one of the Australian aboriginal names for our biggest fresh water fish, otherwise known as the Murray Cod, a big fish with a mottled green skin. I still have seed from Patrina and from these fruit,

Goodoo.jpg (3).JPG
Goodoo.jpg (6).JPG
I had a couple of years where seed raising did not happen for one reason or another, then last year I got a few going again, one of which was a dwarf! Unfortunately the fruit on it ripened while we were in Tasmania and I came back to a couple of part rotted fruit hanging on the plant. Seed was collected and grown out this year, with only seven plants surviving. All plants are doing well and have flowers, bagged of course, and some have good sized fruit on them.
Here are a couple of them, photos taken several weeks ago now.

looking forward to seeing what comes of them.

The last of the liliums to flower is "Playtime"

The first of the Dahlias to flower is nearly fully open now,

While mowing recently, a couple of the gladioli stems an developed a lean and I knocked them out of the ground with the ride on mower, hopefully all the developing corms won't be to badly affected.

Yes, I just hope that it comes through in one of the Dwarves, otherwise I will go back and try from the older seed again

One goon just realised that he forgot to mention why the name Trout Cod. The answer is simple, while the two fish are very similar, and I am aiming for a very similar tomato as in the Goodoo on a dwarf plant, the Trout Cod is always a bit smaller in size. Hence I am using the size difference to distinguish between two tomatoes that I hope will otherwise be very similar in colour and taste.

Lots of images on the web of both of these fabulous Aussie fish. I have caught neither of them, but that will change

Gold Rush F1 x Jade Numbat

I have not grown Gold Rush F1 but I understand it to be a yellow. It was crossed by a friend with Jade Numbat last year and the resulting seedlings are producing fruit with only minor variation
Jade Numbat.JPG
Jade Numbat from last year

Gold Rush F1 x Jade Numbat.JPG
Gold rush F1 X Jade Numbat showing variation of the stalk colour and in one instance, a very long stalk. There is some yellow striping on the fruit, very much in the pattern of Jade Numbat, only yellow on yellow, so not necessarily the most noticeable. Most of the variation is in the colour of the stalk with the plant at my parents being dark green and others at home being light green or a combination of the two.

The plant producing the longstalked zuc had the top blown out of it and is struggling under the biggest plant. The longstalk condition appears to be genetic and I will try to self this plant when it produces another flowering size fruit as the buds are showing the longstalk comdition also

Garlic,

As I have mentioned previously, the garlic did not like this crazy season very well, it also did not like the soil it was grown in that well either. One thing that I should have done was left some labelled tags in the beds so that if any were cloves left in the soil after harvest I know what they are. I did not and I have a number of Turban varieties already shot with 4 inch tall tops. Need to set them up some sand.

That green striped one is really pretty. Is that the cross? How does it taste?

The green striped one is Jade Numbat, a reasonablely stable version of Green Tiger F1, an American hybrid that was grown out by an American and another Australian grower. I got seed from the Australian grower last year and grew a number of plants and passed some onto several onto friends, one of whom made the cross. My taste buds are not the greatest, but they have a nicer flavour than what is available commercially here. I have seed of JN available if you would like some Godawgs

I have two of the cross growing for seed atm. They are about the size of the one against by boot above, my boot is a foot long give or take a couple of mm, these big ones are pretty much yellow versions of that green one

Sorry to hear the garlic didn't enjoy this past season. I hope you have a few winners, at least, to keep adapting to the stresses of your location. The squash are certainly doing great! :) That Goodoo is absolutely beautiful... fingers crossed they come true this year and closer to being stable. Such a pretty fruit!

The main thing with the garlic is that I have enough to replant and a couple to taste. Think it will be a few years before the Goodoo and descendants are stable. Certainly one spectacular tomato when I cut it.
