2021 Summer Season Hawaii
Got the seeds in the tray, peeled up the plastic from my tomato plot, spread some compost, chopped some bananas stumps for the next round of compost, pineapples are in bloom, things are looking up!
Forgive the world's longest run-on sentence please.
Oh, also chopped back my winter tomatoes way way back, and they're looking pleased-KBX and Emerald Apple.

Wow look at all those pineapples! Do they sell starter plants there or did you grow them from cut crowns?

Oh my gosh, it is just gorgeous there.
Do any of your tomatoes go in ground or are they all grown in containers?

Thanks! The whole list is going in the ground except for three. The plot with the compost spread on it will be getting prepped in the next few days. Picking up straw for mulch today. The container tomatoes pictured were planted in September, in the winter I only grow in containers.

Here we go! Finally plants in the ground. Only got six of my eleven in today but at least we’re heading in the right direction. Also got two in pots as a bonus. SOTW and Sunrise Bumblebee are the two I think I’m most looking forward to seeing.
Also the obligatory pine pic, and a new lettuce tower I’m trying out, so far it seems alright.

First fruits on Sunrise Bumblebee and SOTW. Love these big old potato leaves. Everyone looking happy thus far.

Fruits set on just about every plant, it’s been quite dry so we’re looking fairly disease free. SOTW and Gregori’s Altai are standouts for the biggest fruits thus far.

Re: 2021 Summer Season Hawaii
Tried my first Mountaineers Delight tonight, pretty underwhelming. Real watery and hasn’t fared any better with leaf disease than the rest so far.
White Cherry is a monster for me, planted three weeks behind everything else and it blew by them, over six feet tall and dense. Really hope the fruits are tasty.
Some nice KBX and GGWT trusses too

Re: 2021 Summer Season Hawaii
That time of year when there are just too many tomatoes. Already given them to the whole extended family, everyone at work, everyone I know but still swimming in them! What a good problem to have.
Sold a few pints of mixed cherries on a local food hub website, made tomato pineapple chutney and started drying them.
Most of the plants are now about eight feet tall. White Cherry is still my biggest happiest plant, thank you AZGardener.

Beautiful tomatoes. Don't forget that you can freeze some of them whole. I choose unblemished ones and just pop them into a gallon zip loc bag in the freezer. Over the winter I remove one or two to add to chili or soup. Just run the frozen tomato under a stream of water for a few seconds and the skin will slide right off. They are not good for fresh eating of course but they are great for cooking when you need an extra tomato or two.

Really good idea, I’ll give it a shot. Is there a particular reason you freeze the unblemished ones and not the ugly ducklings?

Re: 2021 Summer Season Hawaii
They are easy to peel and I also feel that any with cracks or other damage could harbor mold spores.
I also cut and freeze tomatoes in quarts so any ugly ducklings can have the ugly parts cut out and are preserved that way.
I just like freezing the whole ones because sometimes I need and extra tomato in something like a pot of chili.

Re: 2021 Summer Season Hawaii
In a lull for the big fruits, but it looks like they’re setting again, so should have a bunch again in a few weeks. GGWT, White Cherry, and Amish Paste are the flavors of the week. Also have a new addition to the family, so that’s really cutting down on my tomato time.
Still managed to get some new varieties in the ground, some from Tormato, going to try single leaders instead of cages.
