Unless you knew who originated the puzzle and asked them what their intention was, it could be any of so many possibilites. To me that means it was poorly contructed. There is no way to know what the answser is unless you ask the intention of the person who made it.
I like Worth's now.

I take that back. If Worth's was correct then why are all the other additions problems not correct? None of them are added up correctly.

I look at them as decoys to lead you in the wrong direction.
It is like if you were reading a sentence asking you to spell cat that had misspelled words cat would still be spelled cat.
People are all to often looking for hidden meanings when the answer is right in their face.
That's they way I am going to look at it no matter what the person had in mind that came up with it.
My answer will mathematically always be right. :)

1 + 4 = 5 (+) 2+ 5 = 12 (+) 3 + 6 = 21 (+) 5 + 8 = 34

If you add each answer to the two numbers in the next row, you get the new answer.

I see left column is missing #4
I see right column is missing #7
4+7=11+21=34
5+8=13+34=45

I am a total math dummy.
Could not have done this version without all the others figuring out the pattern.

The answer only matters if you are going to cut something precious.

Oh wow. I closed my eyes and thought about all the words I could. Then thought about things that contain letters. Started getting frustrated and opened your post again and immediately got it. Very nice.

I think the grammar threw me off. Yea that's the reason I had trouble, it was the grammar. 😋

That is also the way I looked at it.

You have three gears the first one has 10 teeth the second 100 teeth the third one 10 teeth.
The first one is rotating at 20 rounds per minute.
What will the third gear be rotating at?

First thought was 13.

Attempt to engage the puzzle:

1+(4x1)=5
2+(5x2)=12
3+(6x3)=21
5+(8x4)=37

I’m not particularly good with math.

I know you all missed this thread. Sorry.
