Today's Big Radish!

This afternoon I decided to see if there was another daikon radish ready. Wow, there sure was, hiding under a lot of foliage.

Two pounds of radish! I hope it's still nice and mild. There might be some pickled or Korean fermented daikon cubes in the near future!

WOW...be LUVin' me some Daikons! Variety, when planted, and how (direct seed)?

We've had 'em over two (2)'/61 cms long, but not that fat!

The Gotch
There are two types of Daikon that I've found, the long skinny Minowase type and the big fat ones. Oops, there is a lot smaller fat type too but they're spicy tasting. These fat ones are very mild in the winter. The seed for this came from the Korean grocery I get stuff from sometimes. They have a seed rack in the store with packs from Asia Seed. Lots of greens, radishes and bok choy. Here's the front and back of the pack I have:

I planted one 4' row across the end of a bed three times; Sep 9, Sep 30 and Oct 28. Four or five seeds per row with 6"-8" spacing because the foliage is BIG! They don't do well planted in the spring or summer, at least they don't down here.

The first time I saw daikon was on a public hunting land field. I had never seen the root, let alone the tops. They were planted for aeration/cover crop. Deer love the tops. Hunting pheasants in there on a wet day was a mess though, the dogs looked like they were swimming.

I pulled 4 or 5 to take home and ID and they tasted pretty good to. There were three big fields of them in the area, and I've never seen them planted since.

edit, my point was, they must have been planted around July or so to be as big as they were in October. The tops were so big that spacing was about a foot per each big plant in all directions, with some smaller ones between that were beat out for space. These were about 12" long and 3" diameter.

@GoDawgs, I'll have to look into them there; the chubbier kind are likely easier to shred for slaw and slice for sticks.

I plant April Cross Hybrid (https://takii.com/products/april-cross/) direct seed in (oddly enough) April and late June/early July.

Pickles used the one before this one to make a quart of a Korean pickled daikon called kakdooki. It's basically 3/4" cubes of daikon fermented in a kimchi-style liquid. It's pretty garlicky but good stuff. She's got a whole book of Korean ferments to try!

Yes, daikon is used to aerate agricultural fields. Deer love the greens so that's why I have netting over mine. There are deer hoof prints around them so they've investigated them. LOL!
