That big bed is about full, now just need to mulch it and clean up at the end of it. The bees love the chive flowers also.

Made a start weeding that east end of the veggie garden. Didn't realise just how tall most of it is, up around 4 feet high. Now have a clear strip 5 feet wide down one side of the garlic, which is just as well as the turbans have scapes that need pulling on them.

I have to keep reminding myself that you're heading into spring . LOL! Nice flowers! They'll be beautiful then they mature.

I grow a great blue Lobelia in my yard. It's a native perennial that serves several pollinators in addition to being lovely, so how could I resist?

@Whwoz Do you weed all of your beds by hand? You have an awful lot of garden space for weeding.

This part of the garden will be done by hand, yes @MissS. The part of the garden that I was working on last night is set up in raised lands with walkways in between. I am moving away from that setup to a level garden so that I can get a mower in to mow and than I will get the walking tractor with rotary hoe in to chop up the roots, just got to get there first, plus I want to use this area this season and not enough time to let everything compost in place.

This is what I got up to last night

There are still a couple of wild mustards to pull out of the garlic, was going to do them tonight but nearly coping a migraine headache at work put a stop to that. A anti-migraine tablet eased that and I know what triggered it.

This is what I want it to wind up looking like

May I suggest caution with the San Marzano? I grew those last year and they took over the entire bed. They choked out a couple of varieties, in fact.

@JayneR13, all the tomatoes here get tied to a single stake. Have grown San Marzano before and been able to keep it under control. Thanks for the advice anyway

A few of the flowers from the purple snow pea 'Jupiter'. The palest flower is from a plant that is producing pods with only a little bit of purple on them.

Pods on "Jupiter" are typically 2.5 to 3.5 inches, 6 to 9 cm long, with up to 8 peas in the pods. Plants are prolific producers, currently the tallest are around 3 feet/90 cm tall and should get upto 5 feet/1.5 m tall.

All I know of the background of "Jupiter" is that they were passed to Greg Muller, aka Templeton on TV for those who remember that name.

This morning was able to drag the tribe out to give me a hand doing a grip and rip session around the peas and beetroot for seed. The later are doing really well, apart from the one that had an argument with a size 10 boot and came off second best. The first of the Golden beetroot is flowering, the rest of the plants yet to do so, but not that far off.

Today's pick of Hokowase strawberries, about 650g/1.45 lb. There are more starting to ripen on the bushes, so it might be time to start freezing a few for a batch of jam down the track

Most of the east end of the garden had flowering wild mustard through it, along with fog grass and a couple of other weeds which had been left as bee fodder. Flowers on these are starting to wind down and more importantly the early seed pods must have been getting close to popping, so out they came until the compost bin was full then the flail mower came out. Most of this areA I intend to have under squash of one variety of another, mulching, gathering up the mulch, mowing to get the rubbish as short as possible then rotary hoeing the area before levelling off and topping up with soil as required, covering with cardboard and topping with tree trimming mulch will happen with the pot grown squash to be planted through holes cut in the cardboard.

The area looks much cleaner now

IMG_20241102_184747_735.jpg
This area at the end of the long bed has a couple of dips each side that I shall have to bridge to get the flail mower over.
IMG_20241102_184750_780.jpg
Compost bin 3 is now full, time to start 4, 1 and 2 composting down nicely

You seem to have a good-sized space there! May I ask how much of your family's needs you're able to grow? And your beet root is huge! Mine don't grow that tall, but then I don't plant them quite as you do. Mine go into my raised beds, including the small "containers" formed by making one bed out of cinder block. That by definition decreases the amount of space they have, but I've never seen beet plants so tall as yours! Wow!
