Dahlias
First time planting dahlias. I have some dinner plate dahlias I've ordered. I've heard that its best if you pinch them when they have about 3 or 4 sets of leaves on them or at about 16 inches. This won't discourage height will it? I've never grown them before but am looking forward to it. I'm thinking of putting them behind the roses I'm putting in. Was wondering if you had some advice.

Re: Dahlias
Never heard of pinching out dahlias and we have been growing them for 50 years. I assume that it would be to shorten the plants up but considering the way they grow can't see any real advantage.

Re: Dahlias
From what I've read, the pinching is to make the plant bushier. Sort of like why you would do that to basil.
I'm also growing dahlias for the first time this year and I plan on experimenting by doing it to one plant, & leaving the other alone. Same variety. I say "plan" cuz I might forget or get too lazy.

Re: Dahlias
I've grown dahlias for several years...they vary in height and spread considerably, depending on variety. I'd recommend not pinching them for the first year, and when they bloom check their heights and spreads. Then in future years you can decided whether or not to pinch.
