Carmello F! origin?
Carmello F1 is described everywhere as a French hybrid, with no other information about its provenance. Tatiana's Tomatobase said the hybrid was introduced to the US by Renee Shepherd in the 1990s.
I was wondering if anyone has seen any additional information about its history.

There are a few discussions on GardenWeb/Houzz as I remember; not sure if any of these details are additional information for you.

Searching for Dona may also be interesting, as I recall a member traveled to Paris to replenish her supply of Dona F1.

IN the early 90's Renee Shepherd introduced two French hybrids, Carmello and Dona.
Dona is no longer in productiion and an OP version of the F1 is listed in the SSE Yearbooks.
Carmello F1 is no longer sold by Renee who now sells Crimson Carmello F1 and says that's the replacement for Carmello F1 at her website.
So I don't know what the Carmello's that are listed out there really are, b'c an OP verion of Carmello has also long been listed in the SSE Yearbook as well.
I grew both the Dona F1 and Carmello F1 when they first came out in the early 90's and wasn't particularly impressed with either one, as to taste, compared with other varieties I'd grown, although production was high,
Carolyn
