How To Post Photo?
Sorry, fairly computer illiterate.
I thought I saw a thread about posting pics when the forum first started but I can't seem to find it. So far I have tried dragging photo from my Mac desktop into message box, adding file from drop down box to the details section of the "Add files" section, inserting the jpg between the "insert image"
. Maybe my jpg is in the wrong format? IMG_20200503_163035644.jpg ? If the pic is too large, will that keep it from attaching?
Will the image show up when I hit "Preview" if I've loaded the photo, or won't it show up until I hit "Submit"?
Thanks for any help- really hoping to post some photos of this year's tomatoes, so thought I'd try to figure it out ahead of time.

Re: How To Post Photo?
What i do is go to the tab “full Editor & Preview. Open that up and then below the message box is a tab “Attachments”. Click on that and another button “add files” shows up. Click on that and it should take you to photo library. Then click on the photo you want and it will ask choose photo size.

Re: How To Post Photo?
Thanks! I have success using that method until just after the red line indicating that the photo is loading. Then an ! inside a little yellow triangle shows up in the Status column. When I highlight that, the message says that it's not possible to determine the dimensions of the image and to please verify if the URL you entered is correct. The size listed is 1.1 MB, so I'm guessing that's ok. Not sure why it won't work.
(I did try to post a random photo in this thread and I think it worked because the photo information appeared in the message box- I deleted it before submitting this message, though.)

1.1 MB is huge. I suggest you lighten the picture. With Photoshop Elements you can choose "register for the web" and choose a weight of about 40 KB. The operation can be done with different softwares, I suppose some of them are free. Some sites lighten pictures automatically but not all.
Good luck !

Re: How To Post Photo?
Kath, you should be able to edit (reduce size and fix lighting problems) with the Mac default viewer called Preview. Just double click on any image file and it should automatically open in your Mac's Preview. Then use the Tools drop down menu from the top bar to make your changes. I usually save under a new short name so I still have the original as is. You can choose from one of the custom default sizes of pixels, or make your own size.
Now you can use the Attachments option from below the text box here. Dragging the file into the text box works also. Yes, you should be able to see your pictures in this board's Preview before the final Submit.

I haven't been able to use a pc in a while. Do large file size pics get resized when viewing a thread? Some forums have it set so that happens automatically. I remember on tville that a large picture made reading a thread more difficult.

I'm completely clueless when it comes to computers so I hope someone will answer your question about how it works here. On the other site, I had to size the photos in my photo threads; but one time when the website was "updated" the photos in my old threads suddenly appeared HUGE and it was much more difficult to view. Not sure what happened or why.Cole_Robbie wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2020 11:58 am I haven't been able to use a pc in a while. Do large file size pics get resized when viewing a thread? There's no limit to file size for attachments. There's no maximum for image dimensions, either.
I imagine it might be failing because the image has a file extension that doesn't match what it actually is. So, it might be a png with a jpg extension, or maybe it doesn't like the extension being all caps or some such.
The forum has this setting set to yes:
"Check attachment files:
Some browsers can be tricked to assume an incorrect mimetype for uploaded files. This option ensures that such files likely to cause this are rejected."
The accepted types should be these, but if the type doesn't match the extension, it'll probably cause issues, still:
.jpg
gif
jpeg
jpg
mp3
mp4
mpeg
png
rar
tif
tiff
If you can look at the properties of the file and see if the type is the same as the extension, that should be helpful. If they're different then rename the extension to the right one. Or if it's in caps, rename it to be lowercase.
I know you might not know what I just said, but I'm stretched for time at the moment and it should hopefully help others to help you.

Testing! This image is 5152x3864 pixels. It used JPG as its extension; so, an upper-case extension wasn't the problem.

This picture appears to have been resized to fit the width that the text runs on posts, when using my desktop. The filesize it still the same, though; so, you can see more detail if you download the image or such.

I got the same error you mentioned when I renamed the file extension of an image to a false extension (both extensions were in the list above). So, I'm guessing you just need to rename your file extension to the correct one.
What is the file extension? If your file is named tomatoes.jpg, then .jpg is the file extension. On Windows, it doesn't always show the file extension by default, though, unfortunately. It might show it to you while renaming the file, though (but maybe not). I'm not using Windows, and I don't remember how to tell you how to figure things out there. You could see it from the command-line, but I don't know if you want to get into that.
In Windows, It'll show you the true type of the file if you look at its properties (right click, and go to properties). It might show the actual file name with the extension in it, too, but it might not.
If you're on a mobile device, or such, it should depend on what your device is, with how to figure it out.

Re: How To Post Photo?
If you can't figure out the true file format, you can do trial and error. There are only so many image types that work here. So, try changing it to jpg, png, gif, and tif. If none of them work, then you're probably using an image type that isn't uploadable here, yet. It's probably either jpg or png if its any of them.
