volunteers
Went to rototill today and noticed potatoes popped up I had in the ground last summer and never dug up.
Went around them to give them a chance to grow.
Regular depth,we had a mild winter for these parts.
I will probably use them for grafting experiments.

Re: volunteers
i always seem to find potatoes coming up in the spring that i missed the year before. last year it was mostly fingerlings, but also some pinto, red, and a russet or two. this year i expect to see some magic molly, and another purple one from last year poking up soon. purple potatoes with dirt on them are harder for me to see. the smaller ones look like stones. i either till around them or move them if they are in the way. dig them up in the fall and eat um.

Russet are taking a long time to pop
store bought white potatoes that sprouted plants are a foot tall already.
The russet are just sticking their tongue out at me from below ground.

Re: volunteers
The white ones I planted are starting to get blossoms.
Whatever that means in the life of a potato plant.
I cut leaves off to clone.

Re: volunteers
sure enough, i missed a few.
the usual suspects. fingerlings are popping up here and there, you can tell by their leaves.
there are also some purples coming up, and some other thick stem ones. some are right in the
beet and carrot row. some are in the garlic. i thought i was pretty thorough when i dug the potatoes
in the fall, but i think that every year. all will be food for the table.

Re: volunteers
When potato plants bloom, it means that they are starting to form tubers. In a couple of weeks you can carefully dig down and harvest a few "new potatoes" which are fresh potatoes with thin skins.
Mine started blooming this week too.

Re: volunteers
The clones of the blossom tops are still alive after 19 days.
Should be interesting to see those when they get bigger.
