Planted some peas today, trying for an late crop. Soil still very wet here so elected to place the seed on top of soil and cover with compost, will see what happens

My peas will go in any day now too. I always soak them overnight before planting. I'm told that besides speeding up the germination process, it also protects from rotting in cold wet soil, which we're always warned about here. I sometimes put them in very early with row cover to keep it a bit warmer, but this year I've waited for daytime highs around 10 C.

Peas mentioned above are about an inch high now, Slow to get going but considering the temps and number of frosts I am not surprised. Will keep that soaking in mind Bower for the next round. have some old see that I might try it on also.

Hopping Steaks:

I have posted elsewhere about my liking for Kangaroos, they are one of our native animals regarded as adorable or as a pest depending upon your location, number of fences farm damaged etc. I recon they do as well on a plate as any cut of beef. This particular mob would be some 50 plus strong and live in the various bit of woodlot and remnant bush land here at work. These ones are not hunted, nor are they feed, they just help the cattle keep the grass down and serve as a tourist attraction whenever we get visitors from overseas to the factory

Last winter I had to change my dog's food, again, due to allergies. Dogs can become allergic to protein in meats. I am not certain that it was a food related thing that time but changed his meat to kangaroo that was available at a local store and it being something he had not eaten before so, his immune system didn't recognise it as a protein to be allergic to. He did reallly well on that diet with his eyes clearing up and breathing not snuffly.
That was during the time of Australia's fires last year. I wondered if the supply of kangaroo meat would dry up. Yes, it did disappear but the dog is doing fine, allergies all gone. Such a frustrating puzzle and a dog too small to get enough blood for allergy tests, apparently!
The kangaroo meat helped. Thank-you Australia!
The kangaroo kibble not so much. Additives....sigh.

I will throw something else up here for you to think about Growing Coastal. Wondering if it is a protein issue or if more to do with fat and the chemicals it can entrap. Kangaroo is very low in fat, 2% actually, one of the reasons we like it and that low it is essential that one oils the pan before cooking the meat if you do not want it stuck very well indeed.

The supply of kangaroo meat drying up may actually have had more to do with the drought in inland Oz rather than the fires. Most 'roos are shot on land not affected by the fires, by in country that has been very, very dry with no feed available.

If that's the case, rabbit & venison would both be good, no?

As they are both lean, yes, if what I say above is the actual cause of the allergy

The first signs of spring are about at the garden of Woz , jonquils flowering around the place, mainly in paddocks, not in the garden here, cannot stand the smell., daffodils, tulips and gladioli starting to shoot and the first 24 lots of tomato seed have said hello to the seed raising mix. Yet to make it to the heat mat, that will happen tomorrow, along with another 24 tomato varieties and maybe some capsicums, depending upon space available.

Wow, it's already time for your garden to wake up again. It seems just a short while ago you were winding down for the winter!

It sure does seem like a short winter season there. Whwoz What growing zone are you in? It almost seems like you can grow things all year long.

Isn't it exciting when you start up for the year. I adore seed sprouting time. My peppers and eggplants are about 3 weeks away, about 5-6 to sow the tomato seeds.

Winter here is mild by the standards of you more northern folk, we see no snow here, with maximum temperatures around the 50-55 F mark. It is also our wet season normally so ground is full with water lying around, one of the joys of living on a drained swamp. Light levels are down too. Summers are hot, capable of getting up to 110F, and normally relatively dry, we would see less than 2 inches a month over January and February, some years we have had less than half an inch for the two months.

Not sure how that compares to your zones. MissS

We have plants growing all year round, the garlic goes in late fall, early winter and grows until harvest time. Brassicas are in, snow peas likewise along with Asian greens, indeed if too late with planting these they just run to seed as it starts to warm up. GoDawgs

Ginger2778 it is the exciting time of the year, waiting to see what comes up. fyi, tundra and the last two KARMA varieties have not made it. Have not worried about it with Covid19 about.

Thank you for explaining your climate Whwoz. It sounds like you can find something to grow most of the year. Just for your information Whwoz, it can reach 110F here in summer but the 80's and 90's are normal. In winter it can get down to -25F.

Those summer temperatures don't sound to bad MissS. What is your summer humidity like, ours is generally low, getting down to single figures at times, makes a big difference to the plants compared to the odd high humidity days we get. Will gladly let you keep those winter lows though.

Yes Marsha, I have not give up hope, mail has been ridiculous here lately too. One lot of seed sent to Melbourne had not arrived after a month, only a two hour drive away.

Today is going to be a rough day. There is a heat advisory issued. Temps in the 90's with 70% humidity. Rain is in the forecast too. You can cut the air with a knife. Heat index is in the 100's . Great weather for growing fungus! The humidity here is high during the summer which makes the heat all that much more worse.

Replacement package took just 3 days. Getting parcels to Queensland in about 4 days.
