What tomatoes have you grown that are consistently not sweet? The less sweet, or the less sugar in the tomato, the better, for this thread.

My Roma are always unsweet. As well as the Money Maker I grew this past summer.

I've grown all of those! :) For me, Moneymaker was the least sweet of those, according to my tongue, but I've only grown it once; I'm not sure if it'll be sweeter the next time I grow it. Aunt Gertie's Gold was the most acidic for me.

Practically dry-farmed Moneymakers tasted similar to overwatered Celebrity F1 fruits to me, except more acidic. Practically dry-farmes Coldset tomatoes also tasted similar, but less acidic than Moneymaker; it seems like everything I've grown where Coldset was ended by being blander than expected, with good performance, though.

Does anyone have a refractometer? What's the lowest brix tomato you've tested?

Edit: Although I mentioned acidic flavor, note that this thread isn't about sweet vs. acidic, but it's about perceived (and/or measured) sugar levels.

Jaune Flamme, especially early in the season. Definitely not sweet. Pretty sourish, actually.

Rosella (cherry tomato) late in the season

Wow. Rosella isn't sweet for you? It's one of the sweetest I've grown. Granted, I haven't tasted any in October. I went to taste one or some today, but it looks like a fungus got the plant, and all the fruit (either that or it froze and started to rot; the fruits look like they've been frozen, but none of the other tomato varieties seem to have frozen, as far as I noticed; we possibly had a mild frost that missed most of the plants). It's a good tomato year for me, but tomato disease is more of a problem this year, too.

Rosella was sweet and tangy, but then my plant took a dive and has been on its last legs for quite a while. The increasingly tiny fruits it has been squeezing out at this very last part of the season have been downright tart! We haven't had a frost yet here in NJ, but I have some Cherry Roma fruits that I've been waiting to see ripen, and I swear they look like they froze, even though it hasn't even been that cold yet. It's weird.

Taxi. It isn't bad, just mild, doesn't taste like much. Huge yield and very early, great high tunnel variety for early farmer's market sales. Carolyn mentioned that she remembered the johnnys owner selling taxi through a newsletter in the 70s.

I would not consider big beef sweet. not particularly sour but not sweet. Do not try BHN589. it is extremely sweet in comparison. I do agree about Juane Flammee and Rosella. Rosella has turned very tangy for me.

For me , Prue is the least sweet tomato. Carolyn had said it had a very unique taste. I grew it just to find out what she meant. Yes, it's different....

It was really such a different taste. Some may really like that it was so unusual. It wasn't "tomatoey" enough for me. If you had blindfolded me, I am not sure I would have immediately thought "tomato" when eating it. Glad I grew it, but if I had only 5 plants it would have been a real dud both for taste and for lack of production.
