This is my first grow out for the project and it has been very interesting to say the least. I have 2 carrot leaf plants, 1 possible potato leaf plant and a really small plant. THEN 4 of the regular leaf plants shocked me by growing hairy tomatoes! And that is only in the first 36 I planted. So I planted more, and looking at those small seedlings I think I am also seeing carrot leaf plants and another possible potato leaf... oh and two incredibly small plants I am watching as they are barely above the top of the pellet but are forming leaves so even shorter then my "tiny" plant in the first batch. Yep this cross is definitely interesting.

This is interesting, keep us all posted. You need to bag the name Lilliput.

Grin it will be interesting to see how the itty bitty plants do. Tiny(F6) from my first batch of seeds is now pushing 5 inches tall. These guys make him look huge!.
The ones with tomatoes on them are about 7 inches tall. But seeing hairs on those tomatoes was a real shock for me...

As frequently happens that tiny plant has caught up with the other seedlings and both of the young tinies I had are now the same size as the other seedlings. However Tiny, who was in the first batch of seedlings, is still on the small side. Of course with Micro Dwarfs small is relative but Tiny is about 4 inches tall and my "normal" sized plants are 6 to 8 inches tall.
This is a "big" plant next to Tiny... The carrot leaf is currently my largest plant from this group of seedlings at 8 to 9 inches tall and is in a 3/4 gallon pot. Tiny is in a regular 6 inch pot from Lowes. Sadly Tiny still doesn't even have flower buds but he is a cute house plant...

size differences (94 days from planting seeds)

This is an average size plant from that batch of seedlings. As you can see E4 is about 6 inches tall and has one tomato on it that is about an inch across. There are another 4 in various stages of development on it. So far this is my most productive of the seedlings but there is still that thing called taste to evaluate....This photo is 94 days from planting the seeds.

Been busy with crafty holiday stuff but wanted to show off these ripe tomatoes... I still have around 10 growing and too green to taste most on different plants from this grow out. OH and yeah Tiny still doesn't have flowers...
I had 4 plants with ripe tomatoes ready to taste, all were slightly fuzzy like a peach but you didn't notice it when tasting. All grown exclusively inside under LED lights at normal household temps.
Imageready to taste by spindledreams, on Flickr

Each tomato was weighed then sliced in half. Each half got cut in two then so Marge and I each got a quarter with seeds, then the other half had seeds removed and we tasted that half without seeds.

B6 blah flavorless probably won't grow on seeds from it. E4 tasted like a mild beefsteak tomato. C3 yummy and spicy with seed gel, still yummy but lacked the spicy overtones when seeds were removed. C5 WOW how to describe this one. My first thought was how did I get steak sauce on that tomato, without seeds still flavorful maybe mustard overtones... Marge said no need for salt or pepper this tomato has both already... yeah we will grow some of this one out...

That you have a WOW is terrific news! How exciting!
What are the parents of this one? ( if it isn't too complicated)

Yay for tasty lines! Please tell me the tasty ones aren't.... hairy!
I just find that such a funny trait and hard to imagine it as something to eat.
OTOH I have seen some of Dan's amazing hairy/furry leaf crosses they are the omni housepets! So pretty and loveable. I would hardly care if they even made tomatoes... :)

Rofl all of them so far have made hairy tomatoes but you barely notice it when ripe. They were not even peach fuzzy! It was more something I noticed while growing. These four were all regular leaf. Got to try another one yesterday again that spicy/peppery after taste but not as much as Steak Sauce. I have another 5 or 6 almost ripe on different plants including my possible potato leaf and both carrot leaf plants I kept. Even better is the younger set of plants from this batch are now starting to bloom.
HL2601 I have been wondering about the parentage also. They have been a fun and interesting grow out so far. giggle I am not sure but I think I may have a dark tomato on one of the plants... All are the tomatoes are hairy but the leaves aren't, I have gotten regular leaf, carrot leaf (two types) and 3 possible potato leaf plants.

So far my best tasting tomatoes all came from my earlier plants. E6 had a mild peppery taste but nothing like the others in my first batch. Tomatoes on D1, F6, and A5d were all mild nothing exceptional to them in my mind. I think part of this could be the growing conditions as it is cooler now then when those first tomatoes were ripening. Since I really like that peppery spicy flavor (think a good Green Zebra) I think I will be concentrate on those that had it for my F3 grow outs.

Good news is C5 ,my plant with the WOW tomato, is starting to produce buds again. That first tomato was the result of a fused blossom so it was not a given it would flower again as those take a lot of energy. This plant is still only about 12 inches tall. Watching it carefully as I am hoping for more tomatoes from it. I did save seed from the WOW tomato and keep thinking I should start those soon...
Actually I have saved seeds from all the tomatoes so far just in case... Grin I have found my husbands coffee filters for his K pod very helpful for this. Some have paper "lids" that I can write the tomato ID on then the seeds go inside the cup shaped filter... They are just the right size for the amount of seeds in one of these tomatoes.

I was a bit of a bad girl and planted ALL the seeds I had saved from C5 on 23 Feb. C5 has buds but no actual flowers yet. What ever is killing my other plants has only slowed down C5. I think it is some sort of bug but have not been able to see the adults only the effects..
The new seedlings will go in another part of the house until I can figure out what is going on and get it dealt with. Especially since that was all of my C5 seed AND 6 seeds from a possible Aztek x Large Barred Boar cross... I need those plants kept healthy.

As of today I have about 10 seedlings from the for sure F3 seeds, another 8 from the probably F3 seeds (I was thinking of putting seeds from the coffee filter into a cup and got distracted, came back and there were tomato seeds in cup but not sure they are the RIGHT seeds so marked separately)
My possible cross seeds are not doing anywhere near as well. Of the 6 planted so far only 2 are up but this is only day 9 since planting my seeds.

My first seedlings were up on 1 March (5 days from planting) that was one F3 and one possible mix. A few were starting to push soil up on day 7 but popped all the way up on day 8. It will be interesting to see what I have but the end of tomorrow...

I moved 16 plants to cups and really need to move them to their big pots. Four of them are currently bearing tomatoes. I believe these are all from seeds from Steak Sauce... can't wait for our first taste of them.

The first ripe tomatoes from a Steak Sauce seedling was blah :( and it was a single tomato on the plant so I was not too unhappy when I lost that plant.
I moved all my plants outside for the summer and the remaining 10 Steak Sauce seedlings are flourishing. A lot have tomatoes on them and multiple tomatoes per plant something I am pleased to see. I have 3 plants I am currently keeping an eye on with large green shouldered cherry tomatoes on them. One is currently showing a deep orange color so should be getting ripe tomatoes to taste soon. All the plants are in the 10 to 12 inch size range. I will try to get some photos next week.

I have had my second ripe tomato. It came from what I am calling plant 2 (numbers faded off on the id stick) nice rich big tomato flavor, size large cherry. No weight as I can't locate my scale... I did save seeds from this one.

A third tomato is nearly ripe on what I am calling plant 3. It is closer to saladette size then cherry! Still not totally ripe so can't say flavor but I am sure hoping it tastes as good as it looks...
Look at the size of that tomato!

Sliced the "Charlie Brown" tomato today and was surprised to find it was only 23 grams, still a nice sized tomato for these plants. It has actually left a bit of a nasty after taste though it started out a touch salty from the seed gel the flesh was blah so not impressed at all. I did save seeds but more as a maybe that size will remain then because I was impressed by the flavor. This was from plant 3 and there are still a few small green tomatoes on it.

HOWEVER I just brought in a breaker tomato from Plant 2 that is 28 grams(the first was 25 grams). This is the second large tomato from that plant and I am looking forward to seeing how this one tastes. The other tomato from this plant was a big tomato flavor like a small beefsteak with lingering notes of just yummy tomato. AND yes I saved seeds from the first one. This may be a line I want to keep going.
