Honeydews, 2020

Here's our first melon of 2020. It's a honeydew. The mother is Huerfano Bliss (an orange-fleshed honeydew), but it's striped (the stripes are faint when ripe), so the father is either Torpeda or Honeycomb x Torpeda F2. It's bigger than it looks in the picture; it's about 11"x7"x7" (I measured it, approximately). It doesn't suffer from the no-shelf-life issue Huerfano Bliss had (where the stem broke off and exposed the flesh). I'm not planning to save seeds, since we grew Armenian cucumbers nearby (but I have plenty of seeds saved to grow its siblings in future years).

We're going to eat it tomorrow (I mean Wednesday.)

I should note that it wasn't grown in full sun, though. However, it's parent (Huerfano Bliss) wasn't either, and it was good.

Looks great. I didn't know honeydew could look like that. Sheltered life, here, when it comes to melons.

What I grew up calling a honeydew was fairly round, pale green smooth skin and green flesh. Maybe a little fuzz on the skin. My dad's favorite melon by far. The honeydews were for the parents; they fed us kids watermelon.

Yeah, the original honeydews are green-fleshed and round with the smooth pale green or white skin. There are lots of other kinds, though. I think Honeycomb F1 has white flesh. Ashkahabad has a yellow rind, but very green flesh (I love that one; not the earliest I've grown, though, but early enough to ripen well in time). Only a few are orange-fleshed, and I don't know that they're technically honeydews, but the descriptions say they are, and they taste more like honeydews than most orange-fleshed melons.

The original honeydews, I think, had a milder taste than many of the others. They're supposed to be late and prolific. The other honeydews aren't all super prolific, but some are. Many are much earlier than the originals.

Honestly, I don't know if the ones I'm calling the originals came first. I haven't studied that.

There are many melons that aren't advertised as honeydews, but they taste a lot like them: e.g. Torpeda, Swan Lake, and Kirkman. Torpeda has white flesh. Kirkman has cream flesh. Swan Lake has white flesh.

I really liked the pictured fruit above. It was definitely above average taste.

I had about 6 seeds of ??? no clue? Had a corner open in the garden and dug a hole with my toe, unceremoniously dumped them in, covered them with my foot and stomped. Didn't expect them to grow but what the hey, I had an open spot. OH EM GEE they are the best tasting melons ever. Firm green flesh and oh so sweet and juicy!
