What's on your 2022 tomato growlist?

@akgardengirl Your husband wants you to grow only 1 variety? What is his reasoning? I agree with @svalli . One variety may do well for me one year and not the next. By planting many types I have a better chance of success.

@AKgardener are we married to the same man? He usually says 1-3 plants. Last year he said 6 and i did 42. This year he said 1 and i will probably do about 8.

What reasons your husbands have for limiting what kind and how many tomatoes you grow? My husband's only worry every spring is that do I have enough tomatoes growing to make canned salsa. Greenhouse and garden is my own domain and I can do whatever I want in there. That also means that I do almost everything by myself. If I need help lifting something or an extra hand to hold something, he will help, but he does not intervene unless asked.

@AKgardener If you want, I can send you seeds for varieties, which have grown well here.

@svalli my husband’s only pet peeve is the tomatoes he knows better than to step on my toes when it comes to my garden simply because like you said it’s my domain and knows if I need something I’ll ask .I think it’s more him doesn’t like me struggling and is trying to make it easy for me to succeed rather than fail each time ! I see his point I just don’t agree

I mentioned Donskoi because it's one of only a few hearts I've trialed that aren't very sweet. It has a more complex balanced flavor, to me.

Mazarini goes way back, it's definitely very sweet and luscious in good growing conditions. While I have no absolute proof, hearts seem to be more variable in taste and texture, than beefsteaks, in less than ideal conditions.

Dester is probably the best, new to me, variety that I've tried in the past 5, or so, years. Next up would be Olive Hill.

Just don't look for much advice from me on anything other than pinks or hearts.

I like a more balanced tomato as well @Tormato .The wife likes the sweeter varieties.I was in the Philippines when I grew the Donskoi,but I was only able to coax 1 fruit off the 3 plants that I grew. I was thinking to try it again. I had better luck with Wes,even tho none of my plants produced much there. In the other thread,you mentioned Stump of the World as a balanced tomato. I'll try that one this year too,along with AGP and now Olive Hill. I do like hearts a bunch.There are just so many and I have such limited space. Limited space makes trialing difficult,so I try to research and lend a lot of weight to those with vast experience with varieties, to help me narrow the field.Your help and advice is very much appreciated.

The best advice is usually local advice, because of climate differences. To me, a dry climate is relatively good, as you can largely control the amount of watering. A good 3" of mulch will conserve what watering you do. How hot is hot, there? You likely know that very large tomatoes generally have pollination issues in hot conditions, cherries much less so. Donskoi easily gets to 1 1/2 to 2 pounds, here. If you want to throw in a smaller tomato, Bulgarian Triumph (a saladette) may fit the bill for your wife.

For the perfect tomato (with balanced flavor), I think my search is over with Stump of the World.

And, wait for other suggestions, as I only know what I like, and what grows well, here.

Can you say you had a quad-cot with a twin header and it's just planted deep?

We ran the Rebel Yell a couple years ago @MissS,but the ladies liked the Dester a bit better. I didn't find the Cherokee Purple to be what I was looking for.I can't remember what the negative was. I don't feel comfortable asking for any more in the wanted section,as folks might get the wrong idea.There is still the question of space as well...I do have a Sis in law who could plant a broom stick and make it grow anything she wanted,but she has less room than I do. lol

We typically get temps in the mid 100's in July Aug. I have never had pollination issues as I have had huge Tomatoes the last couple of years. I put a request in the Wanted section for Stump of the World and Olive Hill and a couple others that the ladies want to have in my garden. Lol

I tried the Bulgarian Triumph a couple years ago,and it didn't produce much. I struggled that year and the whole garden suffered. I may try that one again to give it a fair trial.

I have no idea what happened. Must be the weather. They all were quad-cots with twin headers and i just planted them deeply so it looks like a couple of plants. Also, the weirdest thing. Each one sported, so they are a bit different...

@svalli I would love to get new variety but my mail system is so messed up where I live I literally have to have my daughter order things for me so I get them .so if you could just give me the names of the varieties you grow I’ll save it on my to get list . Our mail goes into other people mail mix we get there and just recently I went to get a package and someone put a stop to all our mail. To frustrating

Running through the pink category bucket, and forgot about Zena's Gift. That was the latest greatest, new to me, variety that I've trialed.

Just planted Pink Fang seeds today. Really on the late side for going from seed for these parts, but I saw the seeds on Baker Creek and couldn’t resist. Looked like an ideal sliced tomato for pizza.

Also planted seeds for Orange Pinocchio or Buratino as it is also called. Orange paste shaped tomato with a pointy nose. Another one from Baker Creek. Couldn’t resist.
