Disguising Price Increases(No Politics Please)

I noticed a surprising price decrease at lidl (until 10-18), down to its original price - canned black beans and dark and light kidney beans, which went up to 79¢ (which I never paid), and just came down to 49¢, limit of 10. I'll find out if it's per variety, but I don't think it is there.

Anyone price Le Sueur canned veggies, lately?

No but I have not been able to find Green Giant Le Sueur frozen peas for a long time. I have never tried the canned version, I usually buy frozen vegetables.I never thought about trying the canned. Are they mushy? I used the frozen in my pasta salad. Would the canned ones hold up in a salad. The Le Sueur brand seems pretty pricey.

I'll actually have to go out and get a can of Le Sueur Very Young Small Sweet peas. A 15 ounce can is $2.58 at WalMart, must be over $3.00 at one or more supermarkets in the area. Go back 50 years, and this is what my mom would serve for special occasions. Back then, there were only canned peas, no frozen, with maybe a month of local grown (unshelled). The other canned peas, compared to Le Sueur, were like night vs day.

I doubt that they are firm enough to go into a pasta salad. I would never put those tiny sweet morsels in ANYTHING, even if they could hold up. Of course, my memory of them is just that they were way beyond the regular canned peas. Maybe they aren't as good as I remembered.

The next time that I go shopping, I'm going to note all of the brands, and types (canned, frozen, fresh, shelled, and snaps). I do know that when I have the urge for snap peas, that is the time they are out of stock. And, I'm not desperate enough to buy a large bag of frozen Asian stir fry veggies, just to fish out the few snap pea pods.

In the garden, peas are just about my biggest disappointment. It's been many years since I've had spring weather that would cooperate for anything beyond a very small harvest. I once had about 100 varieties in the collection. Soon, I'll find out what's left of it.

Walmart does carry frozen snap and snow peas both, down here anyways. Your price on Le Sueur Very Young Small Sweet peas is the same as ours. Haven't bought them in years or the tiny whole carrots, but they were considered "company veg" for a long time growing up.

I grab every can of Le Sueur peas I come across at the salvage store. No other canned pea comes close to em. The large can is .50 and the smaller 8.5 Oz can is a quarter.

They are very sweet. The frozen ones stood up fine. It was all I bought for any purpose when they were available. They closed the plant that packaged them for Green Giant. They were not as expensive back then. I could get a bag of frozen pees, for less than 3 dollars and they are not packed in liquid like canned veggies so were not that expensive. I would put half a bag maybe in a big bowl of pasta salad to bring to a gathering. They were my Dad's favorite.

15 oz Le sueur very young peas are $2.66 at HEB here. $2.58 at the local Walmart. $2.79 at Kroger. I do remember liking them, but I like frozen peas more.

The frozen Le Sueur peas were the best. Best of both worlds. I wish they would bring them back.

11 pm news they said food prices are up 13% from a year ago, but some specifics: American Farm Bureau says Turkey's are up 20%, US Bureau of Statistics says flour is up 24.2%, Eggs up 30.5% according to the US Bureau of statistics, and the highest? According to the US Bureau of Statistics Butter is up 32.2%, and they showed a picture of Land o lakes Butter.

I've seen lists like this, showing some of the increases, but some, like the butter, seem underestimated - here it has doubled, for sure, and eggs aren't far behind! Flour seems about accurate, though recently I've seen some sales - some things I think people are doing what I do and let it sit there in the stores until the price drops! Of course, commercial use of things like flour are much higher than what we use, so we aren't going to affect the price much by not buying it.

I stopped buying fancy butter some time ago.
My taste buds had a vote and by unanimous decision decided it wasn't worth the extra 2 dollars or whatever the price was.
For the most part all of it comes from the same place
or stock just a different label.
There is no secret recipe like A1 Sauce has.
We have literally been trained to think higher priced name brands taste better.
I still see people buying Ozarka water for many times the price of HEB brand water.

I watched a Sam the cooking guy video the other day one 3 years old.
I stopped the video to see the price on the package.
The rib roast cost $144 it weighed 6 pounds.
144÷6=24.
This was southern California prices.

I just haven't developed a taste for canned peas no matter the brand. In a good year I'll have enough in the freezer from the ones I grew and if not, I'll buy frozen peas at the store. To me canned peas are too mushy and definitely won't do for making pea salad.

For me it depends on how hungry I am.
I've been known to eat them right out of the can at work.
I always keep canned goods in the truck for working late emergencies.
You'd be surprised how less picky a person becomes if hungry.
One guy I know from Ecuador ate a can of mackerel I gave him with a J hook for hanging wire for lunch.

I paid $6 for a dozen eggs at the corner store today. That's the highest I've seen. They are up a buck at the supermarket, now around $5.
