Started Some New (to me) Micros

A report from the Micro front. Of the four new ones, Hardin's Miniature is winning the height race at 12" and is in second in the fruit set category. Pinocchio Orange is first in fruit set and last in height at 8".

This is Pinocchio Orange, a prolific little 'mater!



This time I hope to have four different ones ready to go about the time these are winding down. I'm trying to have fresh cherry tomatoes all fall, winter and spring.

Gah. Left for the weekend so gave the micros a good watering on friday. Harvested today and the fruit are bland and broken

Whats the trick to avoid this? I thought they would be fine if i harvested 3 days after watering but nope

I havent ran into that issue yet cause Im always home but not not plants are not taisty either I thought the baby had really tough skins and bland as well..

I'm playing with small waterings twice a day like when I get up in the morning and again in the evening. Before I add water I pick up the pot to see how heavy (or not) it is and add a little water to any that seem like they're starting to get lighter. I sure don't want to swamp them.

Lots of water at once will promote cracking on tomatoes susceptible to that. Also once swollen with that large uptake, it seems they don't lose over time that dilution of flavor. What's done is done. That makes judging flavor hard. Are they tasteless due to overwatering or are they just tasteless regardless? Hard to tell, at least for me.

We'll see how the consistency of mini waterings works. My four plants have lots of greenies but aren't to the ripening stage yet.

Well season is over, here is my report:

1 is a US supermarket tomato, 10 is a Spanish homegrown heirloom.

Inkspot - didnt like. Took forever to ripen, production was meh and the flavour a spitter to me. I like sour stuff but not this. Taste: 1/10

Pinoccio - very productive yellow cherries. Still churning out cherries. They were kinda tart but good. Not great though, 3/10

Bonsai - this one was a success. Lots of tomatoes and good tasting 6/10. Will plant again.

Curly Kaley - this one is a crazy looking plant. Doesnt look at all like a tomato. Really fun for the novelty. Also very good disease resistant. Cherries were really bland tho. 2/10.

I'm still doing the mini waterings now that the tomatoes are starting to get ripe, trying not to dilute the flavor and to prevent splitting.

I lost all my micro due to bugs !! So will start new ones on the list is rosy fince tiny tomum and tumbling tiger all ones I have not grown yet!! Except the totum I really liked thise

Think I had a bunch of baby flys but there were also things crawling in the dirt I have idea where they came from since it’s not from outside anyway had to toss them cause u didn’t want to take a chance of some kind bug infestation in my room

This morning I had to tend to the micro tomatoes. They're been producing well but are coming to the end of their run. I'm trying to keep funky foliage cut off. And two of them (far left and far right in the photo) are dropping tomatoes even though they are not dry or overly wet. I've not encountered that before.



The one with the biggest problem, Red Robin, will be tossed soon. Of all the micros I've grown it's usually one with the least problems but it's got a big one now.



In addition, tomatoes on Red Robin and the Hardin's Miniature on the far left have whitish yellow splotches on them. To me it doesn't look just like an unripe spot. It almost looks like cold damage but that's impossible. Another mystery.



Of the four the best one is Pinocchio Orange. Although it's supposed to be determinate, it finished a first round of cherries and is now covered with blooms and babies for a second run with very few foliage problems.



These four plants have been putting out a large handful of cherry tomatoes every other or every third day for a while now so the ones at the grocery store can sit there a while longer.

How did red robin and Hardin taste?

I need to pull mine out, they are all scragly and its gotten pretty cold.

I've always liked the taste of Red Robin as, to me, it's a more rounded flavor. Hardin is OK , neither a spitter nor a standout. But, as always, everyone's palate is different.

Red Robin has been sent to hospice on the front porch. RIP Robin; you did a good job while you lasted.

I'm changing up from micros for a bit. I have a Maglia Rosa started and it put out it's first two true leaves. By the time all the micros are done, Maglia will occupy the center of the table and maybe cascade over the edge of the table. Or maybe I'll sit it up on a small pedestal on the table top to help with that. I've also got a fernleaf dill, sage and basil started from seed and they will share the table space. The basil is up; the other two will take a while more.

I have littke bing ,Vilma , rosy fince , tumbling tiger going for small mater , snow beauty , big zac , super bush , dwarf Purple Heart dwarf rosella purple, big tomatoes, basil dill , leeks scallions chives,parsley, green beans and purple chinese cabbage!! Thinks that it haha . Super bush has flower buds forming rest well just to small yet but it’s progressing nicely..
