Re: Rocks expanded garden and renewed shed
Just picked some loki and a mortgage lifter, and the ML is in the RKN zone on the last row which is on the other side of the trellis from the one that has zero tomatoes on it. Same seed so I don't know why the one plant is doing nothing for me, same mix in the container, same treatment. One thing I have noticed is I have not had one instance of BER as of yet.
The asparagus yardlong beams are coming in fast, and I noticed a couple weeks back that the ones in the middle container of the three are doing far better than the ones on each side of the middle one. The only thing different about the outside ones is the one on the left has a huge french marigold in it and the bean plants are blocked from the sun at the bottom, I am still getting beans from them but there is far less of them and far less foilage as well. The same with the one on the right of the middle one, same sun blockage but this one is from the catnip I have in there, it is really bushy and I keep cutting it back (harvesting and drying) to give the sun a chance to get in there but very little growth on the beans in there as well. They mean it when they say beans need lots of sun lol.

I'm envious. My 2nd panting of the Chinese Long beans isn't looking any better than my first planting. I started spraying for mites about a week after they came up. Maybe that was too long.Rockporter wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 6:44 am Just picked some loki and a mortgage lifter, and the ML is in the RKN zone on the last row which is on the other side of the trellis from the one that has zero tomatoes on it. A couple days ago I planted more long beans in plastic cups inside my house. I think I'll just grow them for a month inside them transplant them when temperatures reach the mid-90's. Broad mites can't reproduce at temperatures above 93 degrees so I shouldn't have to worry about them after that.

That is a bummer but if you see from the previous posts I was having a really hard time with the wind beating the crud out of my beans and thought I had lost all of them. In the end I have three that I have lost of 15, but the others are doing okay. They will fight so don't give up on them, also if you support those beans and let them have something to stand against you might find they get better, mine did when I was able to get them onto a net trellis I setup on the wood one and I set the net a bit lower than the wood trellis. They didn't get blown around so much once they were big enough to get onto the net trellis. If you were to tie a string to each of those vines and to the cattle panel you have there it might be just enough to allow them to relax and start climbing. Mine looked about what yours do now, and they are doing far better now. I have french marigold planted in one of the bean containers and I think that might be helping keep some bugs at bay. I have french marigold all over my garden in at least 75% of my containers and I am having a much better time with keeping the bugs at bay overall. I have other flowers too and I am letting things go to flower like the catnip, the dill, the lettuce, etc. I figure the more flowers I get the better out there and it seems to be working.

Re: Rocks expanded garden and renewed shed
Woot! We got the second rain barrel setup on the covered trellis and just as we were finishing up it started sprinkling so it was perfect timing. We were scheduled to have rain starting late tonight to run Monday and Tuesday. I am happy to get some rain in those barrels though.
Oh, and there are now finally some flowers on the other Mortgage Lifter tomato plant I had commented before had shown nothing, the Pink Brandywine still doesn't have any buds on it though.

Re: Rocks expanded garden and renewed shed
I am sick with a head cold that moved into my lungs, running a fever and it's trying to break. I haven't done much in the garden the last couple of days but I did pick a couple of tomatoes, another mortgage lifter and also my first ace 55. These are both in the RKN zone. I've picked a few more beans but one of my vines has decided it is finished because all of the beans I get on it are not growing very long, and are yellow with swollen beans inside them. So, I am going to let them finish themselves off and dry so I have some seeds for next season.

Re: Rocks expanded garden and renewed shed
Good morning, I am finally feeling better, not to tops but at least I can make and comprehend sentences better. I tried the other day to come in and make a few posts but I wasn't able to really think out loud like I needed to.
The garden is doing well but the heat/humidity is on now. We did get about 5 inches of rain the other day and both of my rain barrels on the covered trellis are full now, so it worked out perfectly. I did go ahead and put a mosquito donut in each of the rain gutters just in case I have water that sits in there.
I've had many beans, and the tomatoes are just coming in kind of slow. Well all the squash isn't doing anything either so when I get whole in the sick department I will go out there and start removing things from the garden. I have decided that I won't replant anything except the buckwheat after I remove it, and instead I will set up each container with the drip hose to get ready for the next season so I can have auto watering from the barrels. I will be planting that buckwheat in each container so I can use it to till into the container mix later. Do you think I can plant that along with the french marigolds that are in each container?
I don't want to remove the marigolds as they are all doing very well. I have tons of seeds from them too and I do think those marigolds have truly helped in the garden regarding pests, I haven't had a huge onslaught at all but the summer is coming with the heat so they might come during the hottest part of the year. One thing I noticed on one of the plants yesterday was some weird goopy white stuff that resembles someones spit, anyone know what that would be and is it something I should be concerned about?
Hopefully by the hottest time of summer I will just have long beans, buckwheat and different flowers. The trees are all doing well, and I picked two blueberries the other day but they were bitter as heck, and I have fed them too, so I don't know what went wrong with that. I need to get some lettuce and maybe some other greens started in the shed so I can have fresh lettuce on the table, that stuff has finished itself off now.
The onions haven't done too well in those cinder blocks so I won't do that again but in hindsight I used those because it was the only place I could plant the starts while we were still working on the garden.
The idea to use a nice trailer to build a three use trailer is out because I can't find anyone willing to work with the manufacturer to do things how they want it done. Oh well I guess I will just take up a space in a parking lot somewhere when I ever evacuate, as long as there is a bathroom it will be okay, lol. This makes taking a trip anywhere out though, I can't go into hotel rooms with all the sprays they use making them a non option, and I can't breath in RV's because of all the off gassing and it gives me a major headache too, so that three use trailer was my last option.
Edit: I forgot to add that I now have a huge gopher problem in the yard it was all okay until they decided to tunnel under my landscape cloth all over my garden. It is very unstable walking in there now, I have to be careful not to twist an ankle. When my garden was smaller I had a couple of spots in the garden that went unlevel and I thought it was caused by rain during a heavy rain, but now I know it is gophers.

Take things easy while you have that respatory infection. If you push yourself then things could get much worse.
I haven't ever grown buckwheat and marigolds together. Just leave the marigolds and see how it works out. I should look beautiful for fall decor. Your white goop is from Spittle Bugs. Their larvae live in those bubbly masses. I myself always remove them as they can multiply rapidly and they do pose some disease issues.

Thanks, I removed all the spittle off the plants, well I broke off each part that had it. I have so much french marigold out there it is shocking. I had no idea one plant could be so huge.MissS wrote: ↑Fri Jun 09, 2023 9:08 am Take things easy while you have that respatory infection. If you push yourself then things could get much worse.
