Redfish slurping shrimp, put out a faux shrimp, here they are.

I have shown you one of our favorite fish in the local pink Snapper, others that we have include flathead, whiting, Calamari squid and Gummy Shark. A mate who gets more opportunity to go fishing did so today and caught this gummy of aroound 3.5 feet or just over a meter, marks on mat are at 10 cm or roughly 4 inch intervals
These form the bulk of the fish and chip shop fish sold here under the name flake. They are boneless, just needing their cartilage based backbone cut out to give two beautiful fillets once skun. Need to be bled ASAP after capture due to the high ammonia levels in their blood

Caught these Sauger last night & just got done filleting them this morning. They migrate each winter upstream in the Ohio river & gather in large numbers below the dams. Catching them using floating jig heads tipped with minnows. I've fished more this year than I ever have in my life.

Enjoying every moment whether I catch anything or not.

[mention]wildcat62[/mention] those look at least something like a walleye. How do sauger compare to walleye as something for the table? BTW, Nice catch!

I don't think you could tell the difference if they were side by side on the dinner table.

Got two off the kayak, bigger one was 40 lbs even.

That reminds me of a skinny kid on YouTube that bought the biggest conventional reel Penn makes.
It is as big as a gallon jug or more.
He was gonna shark fish with it from the beach.
Even had it harnessed to him but he wasn't tied to the beach.
If he caught a big one it would drag him in and he would drown.

Shellcracker, a.k.a. Red-eared sunfish in its winter colors. Big one, for sure.

Sun had the fish up a little and feeding. Surfce Water temperature 58, Air temperature around 50.

I live near the headwaters of a lake that is 40 miles long. 9 miles of that lake becomes river water during the winter pool level. Shad will be the first to leave out of that 9 mile stretch. It takes the cats a few days to realize their food source is gone. There is a magical time of fishing each year, which last around 10 days. My bait doesn't have to compete with billions of shad in the same water. The big problem is-- the TN Valley Authority might pull the drain plug anytime from August to November. It is never the same any two years in a row. Being a covid shut in, I had not crossed the lake bridge for several days, so I had no idea the fishing was happening until it was practically gone. 
On the 22 of October I saw the water level was right, so I returned that evening. The first fish I'm holding is about a 30 pounder. It was caught at the edge of dark. I got a bank fisherman nearby to snap the picture. The next picture of the belly up flathead, is about a 35 pounder. And the picture of the blue cat is probably almost 40 pounds. Being by yourself, there is no way to take an honest picture with size references. Unless you are in a larger boat. The river jon boat is 15 foot, with a 72 inch beam. I caught all 3 fish in less than 90 minutes. I left the water after fishing for only 2 hours. All fish were returned-- as usual. I just knew I would slay fish for days. LOL.. It rained the next evening, and the day after the cats were gone. I had stumbled into the tail end of fishing. Leaving early on my only good night was a huge mistake. "Make hay while you can" is a code to live by.

Outstanding TomHillbilly... I know exactly what you mean on making hay while you can. I was fishing almost nightly in December with some great catches. But as it always does this time of year, the Ohio river went up drastically and is a complete muddy mess. Still haven't caught my 1st 2021 fish but hopefully will in the next few days. River level is supposed to be back at a fishable level this weekend.

Even back in 1967 it was widely known that if the existing largemouth bass record was broken. And if the angler marketed his catch wisely. Then that catch was worth over 1 million dollars in product endorsements. A native of Cumming Georgia, with only a 6 grade education. Junior Samples was a carpenter by trade, and a stock car driver / fisherman by passion.
Junior told a big fishing tale to those in his county. That story made its way to the ears of Chet Atkins, who was over RCA recording studios in Nashville. Chet contacted his friend Archie Campbell, which had a radio comedy show in Nashville. It was on Archie's show named "Bull Session from Bull's Gap."  Archie and Junior cut their record. The recording was called "World's Biggest Whopper." This recording was so popular, it caught the eye of those that would be creating a comedy show, named Hee Haw. Archie Campbell's radio show started in Knoxville during the 50's, and migrated to Nashville during the 60's. Archie was so proud of his hometown of Bull's Gap, that he made mention of it in almost every broadcast. Bull's Gap has one stop light, and around 700 residents. Bull's Gap TN is 11 miles down the road from me. 
PS--I hope Wildcat62 will forgive me for posting this here on his thread, instead of over at comedy. I did so because the recording isn't that funny. But it does capture how fishing once was in days gone by, at least for some of us? I hope telling a "huge whopper" will remain a part of fishing. In the age of smartphone pictures, the "whopper storytelling" is dwindling away.
