I just got back from the my local HEB supermarket.
I was bound and determined to buy a good steak.
What I ended up with was some of the nicest looking meat I have seen in awhile.
There was one steak I was looking at and some guy jumped in front of me and asked for it.
No worries there was the slab it was cut from still sitting there.
I was a really nice looking thing too.
Very dark meat and fare amount of marbleizing to boot.
I asked for a slice 1 1/2 inches thick she cut it and put the rest back under the glass.
Not being the greedy type I told her to wrap it up too.
Here is what it was.
USDA Prime boneless rib eye for 15.99 a pound.
The steak came out to 20 dollars and was a little over 20 ounces, and the rest came out to 32 dollars.
I dont always do this but I felt like it and I simply could not pass up this meat it (at least to me) looked so good.
Along with it I got two lobster tails.
Along with all of this I got two fresh broccoli tops some Kerry gold butter a big potato a large onion baby portabella mushrooms and some heavy whipping cream.

Beef was so high here for a couple of years I don't think I ever had a piece, for about two years. No idea why. Ground beef you could always get, but I didn't eat it often. Just in the last year or so they started to occasionally put beef on special again. IDK what they feed to what I'm eating because I have not had a budget to pick and choose. Only get the specials, so probably the worst thing out there, but it's keeping me alive for now. I will buy any kind that is affordable, and try to vary what I'm having as much as I can.
Worth it is so nice to treat yourself when you can, eh? Fancy steak and lobster to boot... good for you. :)

I had to laugh at the comments about keeping livestock. I used to be around horses a lot, and I always thought I had bad luck to get such ornery animals... I guess it's more common after all.;) I tip my hat to the folks who do this for a living. Taking care of animals is not for everyone.

During WWII my mother saw a huge hunk of meat at the butchers, lean.
Back when food was rationed.
It was horse-meat,I don't even think it was legal to sell back then.
We went thru that craze back in the 70's
All in the family even did an episode about it.

Didn't Nixon out a price freeze on meat it was going up so fast?
There was also a run on toilet paper I think.

My ear just caught the last part of a story on Fox Business about an investigation looking into the sharp rise in beef prices. Industry folks say it's because they have a lot fewer people working in the processing facilities, resulting in less beef being shipped so there's less income to pay the bills. Still, the investigation is continuing.

I refuse to pay what they're asking now for beef. I have some burger and a few steaks left in the freezer and plenty of pork and chicken too. The beef can just sit there in their case. I wonder how much beef the stores are having to mark down at the end of the "sell by" time and if there's a rush that morning as folks grab it up. :D

Hurricane season is starting early this year,we are do here.the last one was in 2012.
Now we have to worry about losing power and a freezer full of meat/food.
Forget about a generator, unless you get a propane fueled one.
Gas stations will be closed and legally you can only store 20gals of gas.

I think if I went to the expense of a generator I would get propane or diesel.

You can store propane for years,it never goes stale.
I can remember when you could fill a 100lb tank for $17

CT puts an 8% tax on propane if you use it for a generator.
Cooking and heat,no tax.

Whenever I hear people talking about horse meat, I have to laugh, as it reminds me of something that happened in my childhood.
I was over in Spain for 3 years in the early 60s, as my Dad was in the Navy, and got stationed in Madrid. There was a restaurant - Casapaco - that was known for the best steaks anywhere, and I remember that was where I chose to go for a couple of my birthday dinners. A year or two after back in the states, somebody that was over there with us told my Dad that Casapaco had been shut down, for serving horse meat! We all wondered if that was why the steaks were so much better than other places. Doubtful, but it was sort of funny to consider.

Even worse is the $8.99 beef that has pink slime added.
When you dig into a mound of hamburg it should be grey inside, not still pink 5 days after the expiration date.
You cook meatballs or stuffed cabbage forever and it is still pink inside.

Must be some kind of preservative like a nitrate or nitrite.

You can google it
Pink slime colors the meat so it looks fresh even at the maggots eating it stage.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_slime
A shame, a local food store went belly up feb 12th.
They used to grind their own hamburg and no pink slime.
If they could have held on one more month they would still be in business.
