@Jeannine Anne
Sorry about how I had my previous post. I edited it. Anyway, I try not to take a debating tone, but I kind of did there for a bit, and it was unnecessary (I still said basically the same things without it, in the edit). Sorry, if it was an issue (and I don't know if it was for you). I imagine it wasn't, but I like to be cautious in case people take issue with it (and because I don't like to debate).

Re: Rice cooker.
Right now I'm cooking rice in my one and only 12 inch non stick skillet.
The rest are cast iron.
I have a glass lid that fits it perfectly.
I've been doing this for a little over month I think.
It's been working wonderfully.
The rice is more spread out and seems to cook better.
Last night I toasted basmati rice cooked it and added cooked shrimp.
It's really convenient because it's non stick and I can just wipe it out.
Its not the usual coating either.

Re: Rice cooker.
I'd consider a toaster oven only if I could put it outside.
I don't want to heat the house up with cooking.
I
Was going to stop at HEB and look at the rice cooker before I bought it but I had a tire going down and had to stop and get air twice in about 5 miles.
The second time I noticed where the hole was and ran a wood screw in it to stop the leak.
That got me into Bastrop to the Firestone so they could put my spare on.
And order a new tire.
Then yesterday I stopped by there so they could put everything back to where it needed to be.
I'm just glad it didn't go down on the highway at 85 or 90 mph.
Yeah I drive that fast on the toll road.
Well anyway I think I might stop there today.
I'm going back to the rice cooker probably.
Walmart has the instant pot if I go that direction.

Not to spoil the fun but just a note of caution.

High levels of arsenic and cadmium found in rice sold in stores across U.S., report finds
Choose your rice wisely: The organization also found some types of rice had higher levels of heavy metals and elements than others. They suggest opting for Calrose, sushi, and white rice grown in California, along with jasmine rice from Thailand or Basmati rice from India, while avoiding those found to have higher levels, such as brown rice, white rice grown in the Southeast U.S. and arborio rice (risotto) from Italy.

Shule, I have no idea what you are talking about, you have said nothing at all that was any kind of an issue. XX JeannineShule wrote: ↑Thu May 15, 2025 12:03 am @Jeannine Anne

Re: Rice cooker.
I do buy American produced rice as I like some of the ones especially, from California. But I am not a gourmet, I've been known to keep Minute Rice on hand too. I do order some of the japanese type short grained "sticky" rice as I like the taste a lot.
We sometimes like to use up the dibs and dabs from the fridge to add to a rice/cheese casserole, sort of like a broccoli cheese rice casserole, but with the potential to have many things in it. Alternative to make a soup thing at times. We also make a cool or cold rice salad with the sticky rice, and lots of raw or lightly cooked veggies added with a sesame oil/rice vinegar dressing.

Re: Rice cooker.
I don't have any experience with a rice cooker, but I can see how convenient it could be for you. Also less heat in the kitchen, and saves on power afaik.
A slow cooker is another appliance that can do rice.
I've not tried it but google says yes.
I'm back to basmati these days, simple and fast. 2X water: rice and a bit of salt. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to lowest setting and set timer for ten minutes. The first part is the hard part, bringing it to a boil without making it hot enough to boil over. Still simple, even if it does boil over now and then..

Re: Rice cooker.
I stopped bringing it to a boil.
I just set the burner and walk away.
Check on it occasionally using my inner timer.
Seems to work with the glass lid.

Re: Rice cooker.
Went to HEB last Sunday.
Didn't have a care in the world about looking at a rice cooker.
It's part of my strategy to protect myself from impulse buying.
It normally takes me a month or two of this before I pull the trigger.
I'm still up in the air between it and an instant pot.
More research needed.

Re: Rice cooker.
I had to replace that IP of mine. I figured out there must me 2 or 3 coils in there, and one burned out - the medium slow cooker mode still worried, but not the low mode, so the low was the burned out coil, and that was not working in combination in several other modes. I didn't want to wait until July, to buy my next one from Amazon, so I looked around, and found something so good, I thought I was missing something - like "used", "opened", or some hidden shipping cost. It was on ebay, and it was the same improved model I saw on Amazon for $130, and it was for $75, and free shipping, and they had many of them. That only cost a little more than the old model I got in July of 2014! I'm also usually not an impulse buyer, but this was too good to pass up, and I knew I was going to replace it. I downloaded the 2 pdf files for it from the link on Amazon for that model - Duo Plus 9 in 1.

Re: Rice cooker.
Have an instant pot thing bought from Aldi's a couple years ago, but never opened the box. Not against it, but just have too much kitchen stuff anyways. I did not like the ring gasket thing though, and wonder if it is like the presto brand of pressure cookers, and the gasket gets messed up? I should get rid of it, I guess, since we do not use it.
Some what torn on the IP, like the idea of the electric part and not heating up the house, but we have an electric rice cooker - a cheapie one that works well, 2 crock pots big and small, a couple of the really big roaster ovens that are actually like huge crock pots, the all american canners in several sizes....oh well.
