I have 4 phalaenopsis orchids growing in the master bathroom on a very deep window sill. They usually start sending up bloom stalks early in the year, but this year only one put out a bloom stalk. I took the three that didn't bloom and up- potted them with fresh orchid mix. We'll see how those three do now. Here's a photo of the one that is blooming now.

I love phalaenopsis. That’s a really nice yellow, and the purple striping and lip make it more intense.

My mom saves most phalaenopsis orchids she receives. Most all bloom again once they have spent a fall and winter outside, but they spend most of the year outside under the porch and out of direct sunlight. They do get a lot of reflected light from the nearby red brick pavers that do get direct morning sunlight. Only time they come in is when we get close to freezing weather. I think she essentially neglects them, but that’s probably better than constantly being watered like a lot of folks tend to do with these orchids.

I have one orchid, a Cymbidium that I’m not sure how we ended up with. I left it in the container it came in and sort of half buried it close to where my AC condensate dumps. The condensate keeps the area a little moist during the hot times and drier during the cool season. The Orchid gets filtered afternoon light and some protection from the house. It has been in that spot for about a year and looks good and has some new growth, but hasn’t bloomed again. I did one time spritz it with kelp not too long ago. Maybe it will bloom.

I used to have a couple of cattleya orchids that I hung outside under the trees. I love the fragrance of those blooms. Kind of makes me want to get some again thinking about them...

I've had this one for 3 years and it blooms every year. The first blossom opened a couple of days ago.

My orchids that were in bloom last winter and are now putting up new flower stalks. A couple of them belong to my granddaughter, I'm taking care of them for awhile.

My little orchids are blooming. The tiny white one, for a while. The yellow, not as small but still not full sized. A purple one, not shown, is just growing it's flower stem with buds now. They don't seem to bloom at the same time every year. Funny that.


The flowers on this one don't seem to last as long as they do on the others.





i hope can keep them alive during my upcoming move, 1st to a motel for 3 weeks, then to an apartment.

This is one my granddaughter left with me. It smells really good too.

I grew orchids in our home for years - hence my user name. It was quite the challenge as in winter we supplement oil heat with wood so conditions can be quite dry. I grew them all over the house. Then the kids started to grow and this light cart or that got replaced with 'stuff'. I ended up with only a single 4 tier light cart in our bathroom. When that bathroom got renovated 2 years ago, the orchids I had to displace did not fair well. I have not a single one left after growing for over 20 years.

I have four plants in the master bathroom. A yellow one has been blooming since August. This purple just opened up today. The two remaining orchids both are sending up bloomstalks. I forgot colors they are, lol.

This is a single plant, a kingianum orchid, I believe they're from Australia. It's a huge plant, in fact I got 2 and they are just beautiful when in full bloom in late spring. They belonged to a late friend of mine, and the roots are so tightly grown into each other that there is no medium left, just bare roots. I tried & tried to pry them apart so they would be more manageable, and to share, to no avail. It's lovely to be reminded of someone special everytime I see it in my garden.

@peebee , without a close up of the flower, it looks to me very like some of the Dendrobium xdelicatums, a natural hybrid between D speciosum and D kingianum which has been remade lots of times. Don't be frightened to give the roots a good chop when repotting every 4 or 5 years, which should allow you a bit of flexibility to break it up.

@Whwoz thanks l don't have any more photos right now but thanks for the tip. I'll need an axe or maybe hubby can use his chain saw. I've been removing new growth that have air roots, & repotting them also in hopes of sharing. My friend who passed away had 3 adult children & they reached out to me asking for potted ones as she loved it so. It's a hardy plant so even though they aren't into gardening it should be fine.

Your plants look fantastic Spooky. Very healthy for windowsill grown. The few plants I have will be throwing spikes in Dec. for a early Feb. bloom.
Many moons ago when I had many plants, Orchids by Hausermann, was my go to orchid house. Many acres under glass and nearly everything was open to browse. Even part of their lab could be viewed. This was back in the 80's early 90's. They pioneered meristeming for phaleonopsis. Now you see plants in every grocery store, florist shop, big box store, etc. All are tissue grown, no awarded varieties, but they sure brighten a room. Thanks for the pics.

My mom gets those phaleonopsis at the grocery store. Once they are done blooming she puts them out on a bench on their porch and basically neglects them. They always seem to rebloom in spite of the general neglect. Our winters are sufficiently cool enough to stimulate a bloom. The rest of the year is compatible for their survival. They do get brought into the garage if it gets near freezing. Sometimes, the second and subsequent blooms are spectacular. I think the lizards and geckos fertilize them.

@bjbebs , I remember Orchids by Hausermann! I used to pore over their catalog and dream of visiting them. Their phaleonopsis work was amazing and got us all the lovely yellow, peach and spotted flowers.
