I read in one gardening book that a hedgerow is the perfect environment for clematis, especially one called 'virgin's bower'. Clematis likes its roots shaded.

Virgin's bower is native here & grows wild.

Pin cushion park. That’s what we call our trimmed mixed species hedges. Not even an original name, borrowed from the previous owners that originally cultivated the hedges.

Ours are predominately Ilex vomitoria, but with various other species, Prunus caroliniana, Elaeagnus, etc.

Ilex vomitoria is a native species, very useful, the only North American native caffeine containing plant, leaves make an excellent tea, flowers, an excellent honey. The indigenous people knew the value of this plant and used it frequently.

No wonder with all that Ilex in it. Interesting plant. I have the Xmas holly and if I bump into it, it certainly is like coming up against a pin cushion! I didn't plant my hollies. They were bird gifts. I wouldn't plant them now as it is an invasive species here.
