It's a nice optical trick, depending on how you see the shadows the plates can either be upside down or right side up. Since the words upside down appear at the top of the page, most people are predisposed to view them that way, until they see the phrase below the picture about right side up, then the small bowls by that phrase seem to flip first, along with the rest of them. Ah, the power of suggestion.
