I'm so terribly sorry that your friend has gone. As time goes by you will have comfort in your memories of time cherished and joys shared. I hope that your other dog is not too upset and can find another friend soon.

My niece had a Whippet years ago, they're wonderful dogs.

Yesterday it was 19 year old Callie's turn to cross over the bridge. For a while she had been just slowing down like an old clock needing winding. Three days ago, a sudden downturn prompted yesterday's quick trip to the vet who found a large abdominal mass and lung problems. It was time.

Callie's nickname in her younger days was Swimbo, or SWMBO - She Who Must Be Obeyed. She ruled the roost, keeping younger cats in line until increasing age finally allowed one of the other females to dethrone her. Even in "retirement" she maintained that slight regal aloofness. She is sorely missed. May I present Callie in her prime, circa 2012:

I'm so sorry. Hard days are ahead for you and your family. I know that she was loved and will be missed.

Thanks, folks. Already I find myself looking for her laying on the porch so that I don't step on her when I go to water those plants. And that mat she always snoozes on near the backdoor is always empty now. I don't think Herman and Lester realize she's gone. Lester was closer to her than Herman as he'd groom her now and then. But I did fulfill the promise to her (and all the others) that I would be right there with her when she passed.

So sorry. It is wrenching to lose a pet. She was so beautiful.
