That's interesting. Are blunt hearts often mistaken for other shapes? I thought mine was a beefsteak, but it did have a rather unusual and impressive shape the first year I grew it (I think the second year it just looked like a regular beefsteak).

I think I'm going to edit the scope of this thread to include oxhearts that people are known to mistake for round, oblate, or beefsteak. So, perhaps that includes at least blunt oxhearts and giant oxhearts that get squished because they're so big. (But, if you know they're oxhearts, or blunt oxhearts, please say so, as I intend to make notes by those.) I'm pretty sure that includes Wes, too, now that I'm looking at it--and since it can have irregular shapes. So, I added it to the tally.

it is a big tomato with big taste, a favorite of mine, but just
not the best suited for my climate. it isn't highly productive
at least for me, but the taste is right up there with the best of them.

Big Beef F1 hybrid from Johnny's Seeds - someone gave them to me, I'd read some raves about it online, so I tried it and liked it.

Wes is a really good tomato. I enjoy that one, planted it again this year. Not on my must grow every year list but one I sub in intermittently as space permits.

Fusion Power once mentioned something about hearts having an "elongated gene", but he didn't go into detail.

My own observations (strictly my own) are that there are two types of "blunt hearts".

One is where most of the fruit on the plant are blunt hearts, with the rare exception of perhaps a fused-blossom, cat-faced, or other abnormally shaped fruit.

The other is where if the fruit has a perfect blossom scar of just a small dot, the fruit are mostly blunt heart shaped. And, if there is a blossom scar other than that small pin point, the fruit are all beefsteaks. While I don't consider this type a heart variety, many do.

I ran into a ditch with Sylvan Guame. A wrong type, that produced small plum shaped fruit with no flavor other than being sweet.

I don't recommend starting a thread on favorite (for taste) pinks. This site may not have enough bandwidth.

not sure how old the seeds are, but i can send you some if i can find them

It's actually already on the list! Good to know it's an oxheart. Well, the one on the list is spelled Sylvan Gaume. I'd guess they're the same, but I'm not sure.

Sakharnyi Pudovichok ("sugary pounder") are fairly early medium to large red beefsteaks on a compact indeterminate plant which Tatiana describes as "simply wonderful". I think they have delicious balanced taste. They do well outside in cool summers here, and didn't like the heat in my greenhouse. (note: the seeds take longer than most to germinate.)

I thought of another good one if you are including red hearts: EM Champion. I've grown it a couple times (bought the seeds through Ebay from a Russian woman) - grows vigorously, productive, early, very tasty. I've grown it in 5 gallon containers, so I imagine it would do even (a lot) better in the ground.

Those are a great choice. This year I grew a new pink heart that was huge(wonderful) called Pudovic.
