My dad will wash the coated paper plates to use again. I would probably do the same if it wasn’t for a particular woman in the house. Dad also washes plastic or styrofoam cups. We etch our initials into the styrofoam as to not mix them up. It’s more about frugality than anything else.

We, as a culture, throw away a lot of still useful stuff. If I lived alone, I’d probably never throw anything away. My wife loves throwing stuff away, it’s like a hobby. “What’s that opened jar of picante sauce in the fridge, it’s been there three days, throw it out”. “What, are you nuts or something, there’s nothing wrong with it” This is the stuff we fight about.

I had to get a quality thermometer to check food temperature to prove food is cooked, otherwise, I’d never get another chicken breast that wasn’t transformed into chicken jerky for the fear of salmonella. She has nightmares about germs, it’s very strange.

My wife was exactly the same way.
Drove me nuts.
My ketchup hasn't seen the refrigerator since she passed away.
Nor any of the other sauces like A1 and Worcestershire.
She was so bad she would ruin fried chicken and fish by keeping it on warm covered in the oven.
Throw out butter if left out for 2 hours.
Cheese too.

Once opened all of our peanut butter is kept in the fridge. It helps preventing oil separation. We don't have any of the homogenized stuff.

I just buy the HEB store brand that has the least amount of ingredients.
It's way better than the national brands that have a list a mile long.
Plus of all things It's cheaper and made in Texas with Texas grown peanuts.
I come from a long line of Texas peanut farmers including my father and kin folks on the family farm.

Here is the complete list of Trader Joe's organic unsalted peanut butter.

I guess that's a disclaimer - otherwise, some idiot could sue them, saying that they are allergic to peanuts, but there was nothing on it that warned them there were peanuts in the peanut butter.

What would really be funny would be if it said Warning: May contain peanuts.

@worth1 did y’all ever boil green peanuts in the shell? This was something my wife experienced when she lived in Charleston, SC. Roadside vendors of boiled in the shell green peanuts. HEB sells a canned version. Pretty good.

WalMart has canned boiled peanuts up here in New England. I guess I'll have to try them.

I have never had a boiled peanut in the shell in my life.
I think it's more of a deep south southern thing than southwestern.

Canned boiled peanuts! That's last resort down here. Boiled peanuts are a big thing in these parts. Freshly boiled are the best and at various festivals you can buy them in big styrofoam cups to eat as you walk around. The grocery stores sell raw peanuts for boiling at home. Some folks use a bit of cayenne in the boiling water but that's not for me. I like 'em a lot just plain but Pickles says no thank you.

As a kid, when we would travel down to FL to visit relatives, we would stop on some back roads, and buy some boiled peanuts in the shells, from some old black guys with some huge pots/barrels with them boiling away on the sides of the roads. And my grandmother would have some boiling for me, once I got there! It wasn't until many years later I could find shelled, raw peanuts, up here, that I could boil my own. Not the same, but close - you'll never find fresh, raw peanuts, just out of the ground up here. Funny thing - an Indian friend of mine, who lived down in MS, and ate a lot of boiled peanuts, saw a bag of raw peanuts on my counter, and wondered where I got them. I told him, in the Indian market! He couldn't believe it, but then, it's usually his Mom who does the shopping.

I make a Thai version, a chipotle flavored one, a Chinese 5 spice, and an Indian spiced type of boiled peanuts. All good, and takes about 40 min pressure cooked in the IP.

We just got giant burlap sacks of peanuts from the kin folks and ate them raw.
I love raw peanuts more than I do roasted or any other way.

The key thing with peanuts is whether they are fresh or not. Kudos to everybody who enjoys their local product.
It's actually been a good while since I had peanuts of any description, because they sell em here as stale as you can imagine.
There's no way to tell if a peanut is fresh until you open the package, and you don't even have a faint hope unless it is a trusted source.
That has meant no peanuts for me because the stale ones are completely unfit to eat.
The same applies to many nuts and seeds.
I recently got sunflower seeds from the wholesale place and they are good and fresh. Price was right too. I noticed that they have peanuts as well, and I might even be tempted to try them. Red skins type, I remember them being good.
The only nut that stays fit to eat regardless of conditions is the almond.
Rancid oils not only taste bad, they are not healthy to eat either.

Edited to add, we can get decent nuts at Costco here, but they have to be kept in the fridge because that freshness doesn't last long.

I just try to support my local growers and manufacturers the best I can.
That's the reason a rarely shop in Austin.
By shopping in Bastrop my tax dollars go to where I live and it keeps my local brothers and sisters employed.

They'll last even longer in the freezer. This past year I tested canning pecans in the pressure cooker after I read about it. They are just as fresh a year later as they were when I canned them.

I was at the store to get a hog head and the price was $309.00.
Ya gotta be kidding me right.
Then I looked closely and the label said beef tenderloin.
I hope like hell someone doesn't pay 309 thinking they are getting beef tenderloin and when they get home they find a hog head instead.
What a hoot.
Especially if the idea of looking at a head freaks them out.

@worth1 that’s funny. Meat, seafood and produce gets incorrectly marked at times. I try to pay attention to what exactly I’m being charged for. I’ve gotten charged and only found out when I got home for the more expensive sweet yellow onions at times when I actually picked out the ordinary yellow ones. One time I bought a pack of beef tenderloin fillet that was marked “lamb”. I knew it was beef tenderloin by the look of it and started to get the attention of the meat department, but said just the heck with that. I took the view is that it will all balance out, the unnoticed overcharges with the inadvertent undercharges.
