What if you have hooves?

Soil temp in the garden was 80 degrees at 6 inches today, so I guess I don't have much to worry about any more, lol. Temps have been in the 80 but will cool down again. I don't forsee any more cold that will drop soil temp low enough to worry about it any more. Famous last words, right?

Soil temperature in the garden as of the morning of June 24th. Mid 80s for the most part. We had 8/10” of rain Wednesday, nothing but irrigation in the weeks prior. Compost pile running in the high 90s.

Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers all still very much alive. Peppers still setting fruit, at least most are. Cucumbers are also. Tomatoes, except the cherries, are taking a break from setting it seems. Based on the tomatoes with some recently set fruit, I may be looking at slicers and such ripening in August if I can protect them from critters until then. Big fruited tomatoes in August may be normal elsewhere in North America, but I would consider it an achievement if it happens here. Started picking them in May and to make it to August is a long season.

HMMM, July 18 and our air temp outside at my house in north Texas is 110 F. Many of my friends have pulled all of their gardens and are planning their spring plant out in the spring of 2023. Most gardens this year are total waste. I'm doing okay because most of my plants are under shade cloth to avoid the ultra violet sunlight which is so intense this year. If a garden plant is subjected to the strong sunlight, it will probably die. Most of my plants are heat tolerant and seem to be doing okay under the covers a few tomatoes are actually setting fruit (Heatmaster). I'm providing double the water consumed most summers. The plants can't use all the water, but evaporation requires it or the plants wilt. I'm patiently waiting for fall and cooler weather. I am looking forward to a great fall harvest.

Hot day today, but the soil temperatures at 2pm are lower than they were in the peak of summer.

Thought it would be fun to see where the soil temperature is after a few days of cold, often sub freezing weather.

Over 50 F, isn't that the soil temp benchmark for tomatoes?
I would say for sure your brassicas and other hardy vegs should be fine, even if they lost a little leaf. Hope so!

Tomatoes---"If the root temperatures drop below 65 deg.the roots begin losing their ability to absorb some nutrients". If the root zone temperature is consistently above 70 deg.,pythium and fusarium may multiply very rapidly".

Mine was 58 a few days ago when I planted more daikon radish seed.

After 90 plus hours under 45° and with complete cloud cover the entire time, I thought maybe the soil would be colder that it was earlier this morning.

Checked a few spots today. Right around 70°

Recent stretch of cloudy and cool weather brought the soil temperatures down some.

Mine was 65 until that three day stretch of 31,28,29 lows and mid 50 highs with a north wind set in. Today the soil temp is back to 55. But we have a few 80's (!) coming so it should warm back up quick.
