Likely not promoted, rather their insurance company "requests" that it be in the instructions, or the policy "might" be dropped.
Well, I never thought of that! You are probably right. Overkill, though.

I check the local thrift store weekly. Rarely do I go in, and there are no genuine Ball or Kerr canning jar. Quarts, pints, half pints.
The price regardless of size is 45 cents. I don't buy any that are chipped, or have had questionable contents. I take them home run them through the sanitize cycle on the dishwasher twice and box them by size for future canning projects.
I never pass up picking up a package of genuine ball canning lids when I see them. The rings are re-usable. In fact you should not store your canned goods with the rings on.

What's the reason for taking the rings off? When I vacuum seal canning jars I usually leave the ring on because the seal has a better chance of maintaining the vacuum.

Because it's easier to tell if the jar has lost its seal with the ring off.
The ring will do nothing to maintain the seal it's just there to keep the lid on until it's sealed.
This has been standard practice for years.
Plus the ring won't get stuck on the jar and ruined.

I take the rings off - they won't help hold the seal, but could hurt the seal by encouraging corrosion. Plus the threads should be washed after the seal. Plus I have way way more jars than rings...
I don't have a thrift store that I consider local, 5 mile minimum, 10 miles to the bigger stores, like everything else.

The rings definitely help maintain a vacuum seal at least for dry goods. I reuse lids so perhaps that's why I need the rings. Without the rings I lose a lot of seals. With the rings I have never lost a seal.

I figured you were talking about canning.
